We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Mosley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I wanted to create the SayWHA Radio Network to make podcasting easier for those passionate about the art and getting their message out. When I began podcasting, back when Jesus was a boy (2011), it was extremely hard. MANY doors were slammed in my face and so many obstacles just continued to appear, but I persevered. I just came alive when I got to the mic. I found a passion , I never even dreamed about. Podcasting allowed me an opportunity most would think you need to be in Hollywood or NY for. But not only was I doing it from my own home, but I was able to bring my friends along with me. From that, my love for it grew. I then wanted to teach it. From there, what I believed was a pipe dream before. became a reality. I turned working with friends and teaching what I love a business. At that point sooo many more ideas began to surface and the possibilities became endless. And that opportunity, for a black single mom trying make it through school and working 3-4 jobs at the time, seemed like a fairytale. A fairytale that i am now living.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Yes, it is what it sounds like. We are a podcast network specializing in podcasts by real people about things they are passionate about. Our network began as a simple weekly podcast of life long friends called SayWHA Radio®. Think, the Daily Show with Friends. Six young, black, educated, professionals decided to come together and give the world our take on what is happening. Founded in order to do our part in bringing those wonderful conversations you have with family and friends that no one ever hears but stay with you, keeping you laughing for years to come. We decided to put our two cents in the pot while keeping you guys laughing whilst keeping our content fresh, relevant and wacky headlines. SayWHA Radio® network broadcasts podcasts on all manner of topics from pop culture and movies to technology, gaming, social media, motivation, finance and inspiration.
So as I said before, after starting SayWHA Radio® podcast, I began to realize I need to think broader. I have created an amazing system that allowed me to host, edit, market, and promote the podcast. Let me see if I can reproduce it. I added one show for management, honed the process with my software engineer background and made magic happen. I continued on and found that I could then turn the shows into one umbrella which would be the SayWHA Radio® Network. Continuing to offer services for audio editing, podcast management, creative planning and promotion. After a bit, began to add other services after speaking with customers as there was also a need for not just podcast management, but workflow optimization and creative content for businesses.

Sounds like a lot when I write it all out haha! But it never feels like, as I have a great team that help me make my dream a reality!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first started out podcasting, I was probably the only person who would listen to the shows haha. I did not understand why even my friends would not listen to the shows. So I looked into marketing for podcasts and tried to speak to sooo many people, but I was either told, your show it too small , you are not worth the time, or I was actually yelled at. I would be so defeated, being told build your audience, when I was simply asking for info on how to build an audience and no one being willing to help just floored me, Then Wednesday would come around (our recording days) and my friends were all in the studio, (my brother apartment) ready to go and record, I did not care what those people would say. I continued to watch other shows, research and finally traction started happening for the show and I would continue to have hope it would get bigger or reach a wider audience. So I went back to the other marketing agency and actually said, “Hey I hit the number of downloads, now will you help me get better?” To only be met with, “Oh that was the previous metric, now its this number of downloads.” At that point I knew the game would be rigged for people like me and if I wanted to continue it, I would need to do it on my own.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having my view point, but still being empathetic and open to others. It allows for such an amazing jolt to your imagination and super power of creativity.
