We recently connected with Jessica Morgan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learn the best by doing and being hands-on. When I started creating videos and content, I just put myself out there and tried to see what worked and what resonated with people. When I got started, it was during a time in my life I felt like I had nothing to lose so I was open to trying different styles of content. I think it did help to have a background studying marketing and consumer behavior in college, but being creative and taking risks are characteristics I always had, and I think that helped too.
I think what stood in the way from me learning more was not having a community of people who I could learn from. As time went on, I aligned myself with others who I could look up to. If I would have had that sooner I think I would be able to make more of a consistent income from this side hustle. But I’ve grown a lot from when I started.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Jess. I am a Dallas transplant from the Midwest. Before moving to Dallas, I lived in Chicago where I attended college. My full-time job is in Database Management and Market Research but on the side I create content for brands.
I am a sustainable fashion advocate and provide my followers with tips on how to cultivate their own personal style, how to shop smarter and more sustainably, and give them “thrift-spo” with looks that are completely second-hand.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I remember one of the first videos that went viral I had filmed sitting alone in my car. Just before recording, I was scrolling on Instagram and I kept seeing the same outfits, same aesthetics, and didn’t feel inspired by the people I was following anymore. I started recording myself just thinking out loud and liked it enough to post it in one take. In the video I was talking about how fast the trend cycles are moving and how it feels like everyone is shopping from the same places and buying the same things to try to stay on-trend. You could have a closet full of clothes but still feel like you have nothing to wear because you are listening to strangers online telling you what you “should” buy. This message resonated with a lot of people and I got tons of comments asking for help on how to get started. This video ended up being part one of a series on my page about finding your own personal style and creating a capsule wardrobe.
For those trying to build an audience, I would say don’t be afraid to talk in front of a camera (yes it takes getting used to and feels weird). If you are being authentic to your personality and ideas people will pick up on it. Seems like there is an audience for everything now so you’ll find your people if you stay consistent.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The main goal is to educate and inspire others. I want to educate others on how to approach shopping more sustainably realistically. It is better to be imperfectly sustainable than to not try at all. The fashion industry is one of the biggest culprits contributing to the climate crisis. Many people don’t realize that donating your clothes doesn’t necessarily mean they go to someone who needs it, it likely still ends up in a landfill. Which is why I encourage buying secondhand, renting, and investing in quality pieces that will last.
