We recently connected with Jessica Mims and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I definitely believe in this as long as you believe that the work you’re putting out is quality. I’ve never once used advertisements. It’s only been word of mouth since the beginning (11 years ago!). As a result, my clients have always been the most wonderful people! They quickly also become friends and use me to photograph for everything they need moving through the years. It’s so rewarding to have a customer base like this!

Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I happened upon photography as a mistake actually. I had been a bartender for 10 years and the bar I worked at was being demolished. I had bought a nice camera and never used it so I decided to bring it out to photograph the bar going down. It just so happened the CEO of the demolition company was there and offered to pay me for my photos. Shortly after some of my photos were published in Luxe and one was used in the NY Times. Turns out I had a knack for it! I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my personality. There are so many talented photographers in this city but I’m able to make fast friends with anyone I shoot for and they end up using me for life. I also keep a very traditional style to my photos and don’t fall into all of the filters people use now with heavy turquoise and oranges. I want to create photos that are going to be something you love to look at your entire life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My absolute favorite part of doing this job is when I photograph weddings! You get to be there on someones special day and capture all of that happiness! Every single time I show a couple their photos they say they don’t remember any of the day because it’s such a busy blur. You get to bring the day to life for them!
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I follow all of my clients on Instagram and try to maintain a presence in their lives. I love seeing what they do and how they grow.
