We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica McIver-Younger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Lucky 22 Spice Co. started when my Dad passed down my Grandfather’s secret recipe to me. At the time I had two sons, ages one and three. I already was the type of mom that wanted everything I fed my family made with organic ingredients and from scratch, Always the thorough consumer, I started wanting to know where the ingredients came from in my everyday kitchen staples, and I was more conscious of all my product waste. I found myself at a crossroads in life between wanting to share these wonderfully delicious seasoning blends and also not wanting to contribute to all the waste in our food system. I found a packing solution for my go-to cooking staple, compostable refill pouches. I feel like if everyone only knew the effort that goes into packaging any product, they might think differently before throwing away every bottle or jar that can easily be repurposed. All of my concerns led me to make the most glorious all-purpose organic seasoning blends. Between the locally sourced organic ingredients and the reusable jars, Lucky 22Spice Co is on the right path to bring awareness to our everyday habits and how they affect or environment

Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jessica and I was born and raised in Southern California. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for the last 12 years. Before staying at home with my kids, I worked as an office assistant at a landscape architecture studio, while attending college to get into nursing school.
Taking care of my family is my full-time job and Lucky 22 Spice Co is a close second.
I began staying home with my kids when my two oldest sons were one and three. The foodie in me instantly thought I would have so much time to try all the recipes I didn’t have time to cook because of work and school.
I was very wrong. Somehow staying home became busier than my previous life.
Mealtime needed to be simplified but still as delicious as the elaborate ones.
I tried so many natural seasoning blends and they all fell flat or the flavor was so strong, it would make the entire meal taste the same.
I realized I had the answer the entire time, my grandfather’s seasoning blend.
My grandfather created this seasoning blend and used it everyday on everything he cooked, I made his blend my own by using only the best organic ingredients, i have since created two more all-purpose seasoning blends, I use my secret blend everyday on the eggs I cook my kids in the morning to the dinner I prepare at night, Lucky 22 is the freshest all-purpose seasoning blend and its the only spice I reach for in my kitchen
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I did not have a business background when I began this adventure. I would go down the rabbit hole of google searching all of my questions, I finally found several podcasts related to the CPG industry and those sources have been invaluable, I also learned that when you don’t have the answer. just reach out to your friends and family because you never know who might have knowledge you don’t have,
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There is a wonderful book called, “The E Myth.” It talks about being an entrepreneur and that it takes a team.
