Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Mantell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica , appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
At NextGeneration Nutrition, we specialize in providing individualized dietary and lifestyle protocols based on your needs and your specific health goals. In order to highly personalize these programs we offer a variety of specific laboratory testing options to help further evaluate your health status and body functions. Test results can be utilized to better prescribe your nutritional plan and recommended supplements based on your specific results. Through testing we provide bespoke solutions to your nutritional needs.
Some examples of the testing we provide include Microbiome Testing, Food Sensitivity Testing and Allergen Testing, Hormonal and Thyroid Testing, Micronutrient Testing, Heavy Metal Testing and Genetic Testing.
We also provide annual and bi-annual general wellness panels to assess your health and wellness.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I went through a period of my life when I was younger where I felt physically and mentally terrible. My stomach was hurting all the time, I gained a significant amount of weight, I suffered from headaches, fatigue, soreness. At the time I thought I was doing all the right things and my condition got worse and worse. As a result I spent all of my time researching and learning about nutrition and how foods can health our body. This led to me to pursue a masters degree in Nutrition. After several years of prioritizing nutrition and my health I was able to heal my body.
My main purpose for starting my own practice was to help people just like myself. I want to work with motivated people who are looking to live a healthier, happier life and heal themselves holistically.
There is so much nutrition advice that can be found online which is not based on scientific evidence and there are so many fad diets out there which don’t work and actually cause more harm than good. I feel it is my duty to give real, evidence based advice about healing the body with food.
In our programs, we tailor each session to the client revolving around their goals and lifestyle. This is very important because no one thing works for everyone. Nutrition is never “one-size-fits-all!”
At NextGeneration Nutrition, we offer 1:1 counseling services, group counseling, and special topic seminars. We also offer a wide range of nutritional testing and pharmaceutical grade supplements.
We work with people who are suffering from gastrointestinal distress (IBS, Colitis, bloating, GERD, etc), autoimmune disease, hormonal imbalances, and weight management. We work with people of all ages!
I am most proud of all of the clients my team and I have been able to help using the power of good nutrition. We are very grateful that people trust us with their health and take most pride in helping others through their journey.
I want people to understand that a healthy lifestyle does not involve restriction and hunger. We focus on ADDING healthy foods to the diet and practicing balance so that our clients can achieve their goals without the feeling of going on a “diet”.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for my business always comes from referrals. Building trust and a relationship with our clients is crucial from the very beginning. We work with people on a very personal level so this is essential. When a satisfied client refers us to a family member or friend, that new client knows more about what to expect and may trust us more in the beginning stages because someone they know has had a positive experience. In addition, for referred clients the onboarding process is quicker and it costs no money for us to advertise.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
In the early stages of building my business, gaining some capital was fundamental. In order to fund my business I got a job on the side that was part-time. It was a really great opportunity, and I am grateful for the experience. I was the head of the cardiac rehab center at Mount Sinai and I worked there for about a year. I have a degree in Exercise Physiology so I was thrilled to be able to use all of that knowledge. I would work there 3 days a week while spending literally every other moment working on my business. Luckily it was a very fulfilling job so I was enjoying the opportunity while getting the funds to start my business. When I saw I was getting too busy with my client base building, I left the job and went completely into my business.
