Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Linn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
As a content creator/blogger I’ve had many conversations with other women in the field about how we have to justify why a brand should pay us for our work. With the types of content I create it is in a very female dominated field which I believe contributes to companies not seeing value in our work and not wanting to compensate us fairly. I can’t tell you how many times myself and my colleagues have been asked to produce multiple images and videos for a brand to own usage rights in exchange for a $20 product. Owning images to run promotions and use on websites and social media is in itself very valuable not even considering the work it takes to produce that content. I think a lot of bloggers and small content creators do not realize how valuable the rights to their content are and the time it takes so many continuously accept work for little to no compensation.

Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my “fashion” blog as a hobby. I was a young mom who was not sure what I wanted to do with my life I only knew that I liked clothing. I first started blogging in 2014 but at that time the whole world of fashion and fashion blogging felt so unapproachable. I didn’t have the fancy bags or the latest fashion trends. All of my outfits were from the clearance racks so I had a difficult time feeling like I could ever fit in. After taking a break from blogging I realized that I did not need to fit in and have all of the expensive bags and outfits, I wanted to make fashion approachable so that no one had to feel like I did when I first started a fashion blog. This eventually led to me working with some of my favorite affordable brands and local shopping centers. Now I get to create content for brands that I love and put my own spin on it. This also blossomed into my online clothing store Copper Bloom where I wanted to offer affordable and comfortable clothing to my followers.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
My family laughes at me when I talk about this, but I really believe in the law of attraction. I first learned about it from Jen Sincero’s book You are a Badass. I immediately started reading and listening to everything about manifesting and the law of attraction. That was kind of the gateway to what I believe has impacted me the most which is the Expanded podcast by Lacy Phillips. While the podcast does cover some business concepts, it is focused on developing a mindset in which you can start to believe you can achieve anything you want and move past your limiting beliefs. That has been a game changer for me!

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
My business has multiple components. I have a few blogs that I run where I make money from affiliate links, ads, and sponsored posts. I also have an online store that is run through Shopify. I love how easy Shopify is to use, but the monthly fees can be daunting when you are first starting out and not making much from your store. Etsy it’s a great place to start when you do not have a lot of traffic yet. I am actually in the process of opening an Etsy shop to get my store shown to new customers who otherwise may not have found my brand.
