We recently connected with Jessica Kuehn and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yes, I’m definitely happier as a business owner. Not every day, necessarily, but overall I’m MUCH happier and more fulfilled than I was at any of my previous jobs. Sometimes I want to go back to a “regular” job where I’d get a steady paycheck, but I know it wouldn’t fulfill me nearly as much as what I do now. I do occasionally miss the stability and cycles of getting paid and knowing what’s expected of you from other jobs because there is so much pressure to be your own boss and in charge of your own business…but I’m done with other people telling me when to work and how much I’ll get paid. I started my business at the end of 2019, and I quit my old job and went full-time with my business in November 2022. I worked in retail at the time, and I did not want to spend another holiday season working countless hours with minimum appreciation at work. Working for myself full-time is so much more difficult with a lot more hard work than I expected, but because of that I’ve grown more in the past eight months than I have in a few years. So while every day is certainly not sunshine and rainbows, I’m so much happier, more content and more fulfilled with my life. I know my value (and my values!) and I don’t have to worry about other other people trying to compromise those to hit the bottom line for a major (or minor) corporation anymore.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jessica, the intuitive badass behind Beyoutiful Intuition. When I grew up, my mom read tarot cards for herself and some friends, so I grew up around that world. I also learned about crystals, meditation and other spiritual stuff like that. In fact, I threw a Halloween party in high school and my mom did tarot readings for my friends, who thought it was super cool! I’d always been interested in that growing up, but I didn’t develop my own practice until I was in my mid-20s.
By then, I had a degree in Journalism and had worked a variety of jobs in journalism, marketing and retail. I was good in those fields but wasn’t lit up and super excited about them, and I knew there had to be something else out there for me that would make me feel that way. And I was right! I got my first tarot deck at Barnes & Noble, and I studied how to use it on myself for months. I ended up connecting with other card readers on Instagram who were also starting out, and we would practice doing readings on each other in a supportive environment on Zoom.
One of those card readers said I was really good at this and should pursue it as a business, and I thought she was bonkers! Like, there’s no way I’d do that…right? I couldn’t get the idea out of my head, so I decided “why not?!” I contacted my local Small Business Development Center and filed with the Secretary of State, and I was licensed a few days later. I figured if I didn’t try now, I’d always wonder what would’ve happened if I took a chance on myself. During my first month in business, I made $5!
I ran my business on the side for about three years before making the shift to doing it full-time, and I love it so much. I’ve always been really intuitive and emotional, and I’ve learned and grown so much about myself and others since starting my business.
I offer intuitive tarot and oracle card readings, monthly memberships, self-paced courses and watercolor affirmation artwork! No matter what I do, it all comes down to you and your intuition. I help you be more you and less of everyone else (or who “they” say you should be) by tuning into your intuition over your fears. My different intuitive products and services were all created to help us do less and feel more in an ever-complicated world.
I am most proud of the fact that I started my business in the first place and have gone full-time with it. I never thought this was my path until a few years ago, but this is proof that you can do whatever you want and you don’t have to plan out your whole life when you’re graduating high school. You can (and should) change your mind often, experiment, try different things and have more fun than you think is possible because life is too short to be unhappy and going with the motions all the time.
The main thing I want people to know about me and my business is that we are one and the same. I’m the exact same person whether we have a coffee chat or you sign on to work with me. I’m a kind, loving, intuitive, emotional empath who doesn’t believe in FOMO or icky sales tactics to get you to buy something you didn’t even need in the first place. I trust you to know what works best for you (and what doesn’t!), so if we vibe, that’s awesome! If we don’t, that’s okay too!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Ooh there have been SO many. So many. The main one I keep coming back to is that you don’t need to make anything mean anything else besides what it does. For example, having a slow business week doesn’t mean you’re a failure or an *d**t for trying to do something new and different. It could mean people were busier than normal or fewer people saw your sales posts or any other million simple things that have nothing to do with you. When I first started my business, I took everything seriously and very personally. I attached extra meaning to so much, some of which I was aware of in the moment but most if it I wasn’t. It’s taken months and years to fully unlearn that, and I’m still a work in progress, but it’s gotten much easier to recognize that pattern. Usually most things that we attach extra (often negative) meaning to have nothing to do with us at all, so I’m working on spending less time worrying and obsessing over that and spending more time channeling my energy into new endeavors and other fun things.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being myself, truly authentically myself, is the best way I built my reputation with my clients and followers. Since I’m in the intuitive, spiritual space, being seen as a human and not a robot is super important to me. I want someone to feel like they truly know and understand me, whether we end up working together or not. I show up as consistently as I can, which looks different all the time, but I’m always honest about how I’m feeling and what’s going on for me. I don’t believe in toxic positivity or faking it until you make it. I believe in being vulnerable, honest and authentic, even (especially) when it’s uncomfortable.
