We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Kidd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with the idea of The Beauty Hub because salon suites were totally missing the community and collaboration feel of traditional salons. I was ready to close my full service salon, but I wasn’t done with salon ownership. I just wanted to do it differently. A way that required less micro management and more freedom for myself. After seeing a great migration to salon suites after the pandemic, I knew this was the next step for me. So I started jotting down what I loved and what I hated about salon suites. I started brainstorming what the ideal salon suite company would look like, would feel like and more and The Beauty Hub was born. The Beauty Hub would be more of a co-working space for beauty and creative professionals. A place where they could really thrive in this industry. It would be a place where they could collaborate and network with other like minded individuals. A place where they could expand and grow their brands by teaching a workshop in the classroom, start and record a podcast, or even shoot content in the photography studio. It would be a hub of business resources that would help strengthen their business practices and sharpen their technical skills. It would be a place where beauty pros and creatives could gather. Tech start ups have places like WeWork and Spaces, we had no where. Now we do.
I knew an idea like I couldn’t do alone. It would take a lot of money and assistance. So I started pitching it to investors. Ironically, my long time client, turned friend was interested in investing and diving into business ownership. One day she came in for an appointment and asked my take on salon suites. And the rest is history! She became our 1st investor into this idea. Now we share the title of co-owners. It has been a wonderful journey!

Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started out in the beauty industry 20 years ago. I was always intrigued by the women in my life who were seamstresses and beauticians. As a child this is where my love for beauty really began. Fast forward to high school years and I was accepted into the Cosmetology program at Edmondson-Westside High School. Upon graduating I was eligible to take the state board exam for Cosmetology. I failed the first time. I went back a year later and passed and my professional journey began.
I have gone to Atlanta, London and LA to just name a few to perfect my craft, learn more about hairdressing and the business of beauty. I opened a full service salon in 2018 under my brand, House Of Bombshell. After 5 successful years, I expanded the salon part of my business, rebranded and brought on a partner to launch The Beauty Hub. Maryland’s first and only salon and content studios!

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Our relationship started about 15 years ago when Keona was referred to me by mutual friends to get a haircut. Throughout those years we became really good friends. During the later years Keona would come in for an appointment and she would get my insight on different business ideas she had. One day she asked about salon suites, not knowing about this idea I had. I briefly mentioned I had been working on something like salon suites and she said she wanted to know more. A month or so later I pitched The Beauty Hub to her and she became our 1st investor. Keona did more than asked of her. We officially became co-owners and it has been such a great experience. A new experience for me, as I am used to doing everything alone. It has been great to go through this process with someone else who I can trust.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Having integrity. My years of experience. My commitment to always learning and growing.
