We were lucky to catch up with Jessica and David Kallenbach recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica and David, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
With regard to the question of what corporate America gets wrong in my industry, the first thought that comes to mind is the neglect of corporate level photographers to connect with their clients on a human level. At Beauty Unveiled Studios, we have endeavored to maintain as one of our core values the importance of connecting with our clients in a very personal way so that they know that they are not merely “dollar signs” or a business transaction to us.
We really do care about our clients as individuals. We want to hear their stories and get to know them. We feel that in relating to them as individuals of great intrinsic worth at the heart/soul level, we will better be able to serve them as we create art with them as the center-piece.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jessica Kallenbach, I am 37 years old and live out in beautiful West Georgia with my husband David with whom I started this business 10 years ago. We got into photography because we wanted to find a way to connect with people and impact their lives in a very powerful and positive manner.
The philosophy behind Beauty Unveiled Studios is that every individual has their own unique God given beauty to unveil, thereby seeing their own beauty and believing in their own worth as individuals which will in turn empower them to live confidently in the knowledge that they are truly beautiful, others are beautiful and even that life itself has its own beauty to unveil.
We specialize in stylized portrait photography, wedding photography, engagement sessions and all manner of family portraits.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I chose to address the issue of business funding and initial start up capital because I feel that this issue more than most other issues is the one that seems to paralyze new entrepreneurs because they don’t know how to get the money to get started in their business endeavors. My husband David and I had zero startup funding/capital when we started our business a decade ago.
You read that correctly…we had zero.
We also did not feel it was the correct path for us to go and borrow a bunch of funds from any lending institution thereby acquiring a bunch of debt as one of our startup business experiences.
What we did is we provided our services to our first client, delivered a quality experience that the client was very satisfied with, charged our service fees and then kept the profit after expenses.
Then, we were hired again shortly thereafter and were able to keep even a bit more profit after that service was provided.
Our process of growth with regard to financing our business has been that we have always been very careful to save money after each business/client service transaction, we have kept our debt to income ratio at a minimum and have kept our operating expenses low.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The primary thing that helped grow our reputation within our market is without a doubt the emphasis we place on connecting well with our clients and providing for them an empowering, engaging and inspiring experience. As I mentioned earlier in the article, we believe in celebrating the unique, intrinsic value in each individual client.
We make a sincere effort to get to know our clients and a large portion of them end up becoming long term friends.
