We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Jones . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Hi Jessica , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Taking the risk at 20 years old to quit my job and start my lash business was frightening to say the least. My parents had always worked in the corporate field, and I had no friends or family that owned their own business to ask for advice. I knew I if I wanted to be an independent lash artist I had to figure it out on my own.
End of year 2018 I invested in the best lash trainings available, shortly after that in the beginning of 2019 I went all in with no back up plan. I took every dime to my name and signed on a small salon suite in Scottsdale Arizona with all the excitement in the world. Beauty Behavior was born!
The fear of failure was overwhelming. Yet, I was confident I would succeed because my purpose has always been clear since I was little. I was going to make as many women as possible feel beautiful and empowered inside and out.
In the beginning, 8-12 hour days were the norm even when I hardly had clients. I was always practicing, learning instagram, and curating my studio to be a haven for clients to relax and feel pampered. Truthfully, that first year was discouraging. I believe I spent more money than I made just on overhead. Surprisingly I didn’t let it get me down at the time, unwavering belief for a successful future kept my spirits high enough to keep going.
I listened to every podcast under the sun that encompassed business, mindset, and the beauty industry. One thing they all had in common was that hard work and consistency beat talent and luck EVERY TIME. I proved this to be true. After a couple years of lashing my butt off I grossed my first 6 figures in my early twenties.
Through the inevitable ups and downs, the risk was well worth it. But not just financially. In the process of growing my business I was also growing into the women I’d always wanted to be. Fulfilling my purpose of making each of my clients lives just a little brighter was the real reward. Without taking the risk to start my business I would’ve missed out on helping as many women as possible feel a bit more loved, a bit more beautiful, and a bit more confident.
Now my next venture is to teach other new artists to do the same.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jessica Jones, I just turned 25 years old and I’ve been a lash artist for 6 years now!
After high school I enrolled in esthetics school and found girls doing eyelash extensions in their free time. The lash industry was brand new and I took interest in it immediately. I was blown away by how someone could do such detail oriented work. They looked so beautiful, and I would see girls wear them with no makeup which really appealed to me.
After esthetics school I jumped into working at a lash franchise. It didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to give my clients more time, attention, and quality. That was the catalyst to my story. I set out to ensure I would do lashes to the highest standard, and maintain quality+consistency that was hard to find elsewhere.
The concept of providing a top tier experience to my clients has set me apart since day one. I feel that’s the reason the majority of my clients have been with me for 3, 4, or even 5 years now!
I believe how you do one thing is how you do everything and I’ve always strived to ensure my client’s results and experience goes above and beyond in every aspect.
Nowadays the industry tells you to get as many clients in and out as possible to generate max revenue. However I’ve always taken the long route, and done things the right way. I want to be known for quality instead of quantity. I’ve proven that to be extremely successful for me and I want to encourage other artists to do the same.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for building a solid clientele for me, has been word of mouth/referrals. It might sound old fashioned however I believe it’s the most powerful. In a digital world, it’s refreshing to have a friend or family member recommend a service they love. The best part about referrals is that it attracts similar clients. When you find your ideal client, they will naturally spread the word to their close circle and so on.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I don’t think I’m speaking for just myself when I say the shut down in 2020 was detrimental to small businesses. Arizona had a 6 week shutdown, which was actually minor in comparison to other states across the country. Resiliency was the defining trait for everyone in the beauty industry at that time. It was scary ever changing, and confusing. I knew giving up wasn’t an option. had to take risks to keep my business open and pivot a few times until I finally got my grips again. I’m so grateful I pushed through that scary year.
