Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
When it comes to my business, daily I think of things I wish I could do differently. First and foremost I would not have wasted time on things that didn’t align with the goals that I have. Time is so valuable, so wasting it is the ultimate tragedy.
Jessica , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jessica and I am a hair lover! I love everything about hair, ranging from different textures, lengths and more! My mother was a beautician, so by default I was drawn to hair. I found joy in the process , the smile on the clients face, and the money I was able to make simply by doing something I loved. Prior to becoming a full time hair stylist I worked in customer service. This field allowed me to learn how to handle different people. The joy of problem solving and educating a client became very easy due to prior experience. Having customer service experience helps me with my clients. Being able to first listen and identify the need then execute the solution. This has given be an advantage over others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Covid was a very tough time for many. My industry took many hits due to the social distance rules. I was able to work on my craft of wig making so present my clients with an alternative. I was excited to have them back in my chair, but safety first.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I always had the desire to do hair but found little hope in quitting my full time job. I was always telling people my full time job is my secured funds. I know for sure the funds will hit the bank. One day I realized my dream was paying me more than the full time job. I prayed for guidance and one day I just quit. I put trust in myself and my abilities and was able to buy my freedom. I was able to even make money in my sleep due to having my hair business and being a hair stylist.
