We were lucky to catch up with Jessica ‘Jet’ Houston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica ‘Jet’, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been blessed enough to earn a full time living from my creative work for several years. I never would have thought that it would a possibility when I decided to pick up a new hobby. That hobby became a craft that I’ve been loving to do since the beginning. It took some months to get to the point of pursuing my art full time. I worked a full time job and any free time I had was used to get better at wire wrapping. As a creative you can’t predict where your next dollar will come from and you just have to dive in head first and trust the process. There have been times where I’ve thought about getting a job when times were rough, but I never gave up and I am fortunate enough to say that I am still a full time artist. I believe the exact process I went through was exactly what I needed to get to where I am today. I don’t believe I would be as grateful as I am if it were an easy process.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
GoodVibeWraps was born in Columbia in 2017. As a child, I had an interest in crystals and as an adult, I started to learn about the metaphysical properties sparking my interest all over again. The more I researched, I came across the art of wire wrapping and knew immediately that I wanted to give it a try. I literally told myself “I can do that”. To be honest, it took a whole year for me to actually start practicing seriously. It was just a hobby in the beginning, but I quickly began to receive a request for my work and customized pieces. It’s amazing how fruitful planting one seed can be! This motivated me to attend the Soda City Market in Columbia and after several successful weekends, I knew I wouldn’t be working for Nestle much longer. Eight months after creating, I was able to leave my full-time job and pursue GVW 100%.
I knew I wanted to grow my audience beyond SC and Atlanta was calling my name. I attended several markets in a matter of a few months and made a decision to break my current lease, pack up all of my belongings and move to Atlanta! Once I arrived in 18’ I had no permanent place to live, but the Universe made a way for me to have temporary homes until I was stable. Vending at countless amounts of markets and events has paid off in a big way resulting in GVW being very well know on and offline. Our Etsy shop currently has over 900 reviews averaging 5 stars! I am grateful for every speed bump on this journey.
I specifically specialize in wire wrapping with the use of crystal gems. Customized pieces are my favorite to create as they challenge me to elevate my craft. I take great pride in knowing that the quality of my work sets me apart from others. I put my all into the pieces I create and have earn the nickname “spider” for my intricate work!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fact that there are many individuals in this world that want to support work that you have put all of your energy into. We spend countless hours in making our ideas come to life and to have the support from people that don’t know you at all is such an amazing feeling. Knowing that your work touches the souls of many makes all the hard work worth it and then some!

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
From my experience there are some non creatives that do not understand the way we value our work. There have been countless amounts of times where I’ve been asked why my pieces cost what they are. I find this to be an unreasonable question. My reason for this is because they more than likely would not ask the same question for a major company and will buy the product without a second thought. Buy whatever you want with your dollars, but respect needs to be given to those that create pieces with their own blood, sweat, and tears.
