We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Hobart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I began learning how to be successful at resin/epoxy art by hopping on the Tik-Tok trend during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic! I watched numerous videos on both that platform + many others and eventually began to connect myself with other artists via Instagram in order to learn more. Eventually, I made contact with an alcohol ink artist who taught me the basics of working with inks and my artistic abilities expanded tremendously with her assistance. To speed up the learning process, I wish I would have reached out to other artists sooner, as often-times many artists are willing to help teach others! The skills that were most essential to my learning included learning how to manipulate alcohol ink to work how I wanted it to and how to use power tools to enhance some of my projects. I would identify having limited time to spend outside of my full-time job to learn my art as being the biggest obstacle.
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I began my art/small business journey as a coping skill during the summer of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic was gaining intensity & instilling fear into the world. For myself, I needed to do something outside of my healthcare profession (clinical social worker) in order to keep my own mind sane. What started as a simple hobby of resin/epoxy art quickly turned into a small business & over time it encompassed both jewelry design + alcohol ink abstract art.I currently provide the following items: Wall art, nickel-free jewelry, digital design products, cards, tumblers and a variety of other small projects!
What sets myself apart from others is that I have a strong focus on affordable art for everyone – I want anyone who stops by my table to be able to find something that is within their budget. I strongly feel that art should be in everyone’s homes and I want to ensure that individuals of all income levels can be included in that. I personally speak with each client and we come up with a negotiated price for their needs, as I simply want to provide beautiful art + jewelry to each individual.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society in general can best support artists by sharing their work, particularly on social media. Artists are able to expand their audience and customer base simply by others sharing their social media pages, their artist photos and event information.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I personally wish I knew about all the deals/sales that large craft/art stores provide. As an artist, the first year is the most expensive and I personally wish I would have known about these deals in order to save money in the long run!
