We recently connected with Jessica Higgins and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
During Covid, I decided to make a career change. I was doing sales in Nashville, TN and was really unhappy. Skincare had always been something that I was interested in and had affected my life personally. I decided to take that time and invest most of my savings to go to esthetician school. I then spent another year shadowing and learning from other professionals who all encouraged me to open my own studio. Another huge risk. I was scared no one would come and I would invest all of this money into something that didn’t work, but every one told me it was now or never. I decided to take the jump and for the first few months I would sit in my studio 7 days a week and hope that more than 3 people would make an appointment. Soon, my work spoke for itself and less than 2 years after taking that risk, I have been able to hire an employee and have a waitlist for new clients.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Jessica Clarke Higgins, a licensed esthetician and acne specialist from Nashville, TN, now with a skincare practice located on South Pearl Street in Denver, CO. I struggled with cystic acne in high school and college and went on accutane then tried every other treatment under the sun. It wasn’t until my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and I started to look into the ingredients of our every day products that I realized that what I was putting on my skin might have been causing more harm than good. I decided to dive deeper into lifestyle factors that can affect skin and was able to heal mine truly for the long-haul. I decided to go back to esthetician school before moving to Denver with my now-husband and 3 years later, here we are!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Listening more than talking to my clients. Hearing their pain points and products or procedures that have hurt them in the past has been the most helpful thing to me. I also love when I can collaborate with a client to make skincare approachable, affordable, and enjoyable. I don’t take an all-or-nothing approach and I think that going slow has proven to be the best way.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For the skin industry, it’s all about before/after photos. I think having and posting those to social media has been huge. Other than that, it’s really taking the time with each client to make them feel heard and for them to see the improvements in their skin that they want. That’s what makes them tell their friends to come in!
