We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Hernandez Park a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica , appreciate you joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.

After 4 years in working on my business I have realized that marketing is far more important than purchasing equipment. Obviously you need tools to make your business grow however keeping a smaller menu of highly marketable tools will be easier to market and profitability can be achieved quicker.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

As a business person my goal is two fold. Customer satisfaction is number one and employee satisfaction is also number 1. It is extremely difficult to balance but it goes hand in hand. Happy employees take better care of customers. Well taken care of customers are repeat customers.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

Traditional funding fo me was very difficult. In my experience no one wanted to fund a start up in the aesthetics field. I would often read about these funding circles in silicon valley who poured millions of dollars into ventures and wondered what I was doing wrong. At the end of the day I believed in myself so I used my retirement savings to fund my business.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

The best decision is the decision made. Even if it’s the wrong decision at the time , decisions allow you to keep momentum forward and make better choices. YOu have a foundation on how to pivot and where to go. Yes I pivot on a quarterly or mid year basis based on the information available,
