Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Hayes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
Something innovative I’ve done since beginning Dream Cosmetics 3 years ago has been creating our Vegan Hair Serum. We use natural fruit, vegetables, and herbs that you consume in your everyday lives along with solar energy from the sun. This technique still blows me away every time I talk about it. While this is an innovative way to create hair products, it has a purpose behind it. Dream wanted to find a way to deposit the nutrients from the herbs, vegetables, and various fruits into the 4 carefully chosen fatty oils, so the serum could be potent. So, for a month the oil soaks up the nutrients from the ingredients, while sitting in 100+ degree weather. If you are from Memphis, TN or down south, you know it’s always hot! Therefore, we always have access to the heat, even during the winter months. This enables us to keep up with production! With that being said, our goal was to create a magnificent product to target specific problems that women face on a daily basis. That’s why we designed a special hair serum versus a hair oil. An oil is designed only to moisturize your hair versus serums that have a designated job. Our serum targets a specific problem, which is a dry & itchy scalp, while also stimulating hair growth, and it moisturizes the hair at the same time. There aren’t many vegan hair options in the industry that can promise to heal your inflamed scalp, while also stimulating your hair follicles to encourage new hair growth. That’s what makes Dream Cosmetics unique and innovative.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
You know being a business owner is not an easy task. Creating a business really tells you about you. What I mean by that is, creating my business showed me that I was lazy, fearful, and I doubted my capabilities. So, before I could really focus on being a content creator, business owner, and hair influencer. God had to deal with me first and boy let me tell you it didn’t feel good. After dealing with my issues, I began to break free from doubt and that made me see that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. It took a mind renewal, prophecies, being in the presence of God to really get to know who I am. It’s by the grace of God that I am who I am, so I’m going to walk boldly into who He created me to be. Then fear of failure crept in, that I wouldn’t succeed in this business, so I had to deal with my thoughts and think about what I was thinking about. I had to realize those are not Godly thoughts. Then I knew that those thoughts could only come from one person, the father of lies, satan! I had to change my story, I began to speak what God said about me. I’m his workmanship, I’m his child, I’m loved by him, and I’m a creative genius. I began to believe those things. Lastly, the hardest part was laziness! I didn’t want to put in the work because fear gripped me, now I’m all about funding, building, and shaping my business. Dealing with these issues have helped me become more disciplined when it comes to reaching my goals. I’m not perfect, but I’m striving to be the best entrepreneur I can be.
Thank God for the Truth Church located in Memphis, TN. My church community has helped me every step of the way with becoming an entrepreneur. My photographer, my business coach, investor, and a large chunk of my customer base attends there as well.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
You know I didn’t have to raise the funds for my business or take out any business or personal loans. My goal has always been to stay debt free during this process. My family knew that as well, so they came together and bought me a KitchenAid to make larger batches of my Vegan Hair Butter. I used money from my personal account to buy small bottles of oils and small packs of herbs to test in a Mason Jar to test out how I would want my oil to feel, smell, and work on the scalp. As of 2023, I’m still debt free and It will remain that way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m learning that people just want to see the real you. Not a social media version of you, but just pure authentic realness. A person that they can relate to, learn from, and connect with. Social media is about building connections between you and your consumers/followers. Be you, never change nor alter your personality to fit in. I tried that and I didn’t get anywhere with those antics. Now, I love the interaction between my followers and I. I can be my silly, goofy, and authentic self.
