We were lucky to catch up with Jessica Gray recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
You know that feeling. The curiosity.. The, what if? The piece of the puzzle you can’t quite see, yet, it calls to you. Some risks have great reward and some leave us taking inventory of what happened. Regardless, I’d say the risk is typically worth it.
There are many times I have taken risks in my career and in my personal life. One of those risks was diving into the vulnerability of sharing my own original music. This risk was one of the greatest. On the line, were the deepest parts of my spirit and soul. My reward in turn, would be a journey sprinkled with beautiful learning experiences and moments of pure bliss.
The moral of the story; Apply for the job, ask them out, share your idea, speak up, address your need, take the risk!
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a musician, a singer/songwriter! I play with a variety of bands in the KC area and beyond. My band is called, Into The Gray. I once heard someone say our power lies within what we are naturally gifted with in this life.
I’ve loved to sing and dance for as long as I can remember. It is something that is etched into my spirit. It is a part of my soul. These are modalities that offer me the expression of self and complete freedom to create.
Since I was little, my family encouraged me to be a part of many different outlets to share my creativities. However, It wasn’t until I was able to choose to share outwardly with the world that the I gained true momentum. This momentum was coupled with leaning into opportunities and taking steps to meet my goals.
I’m very thankful to share what I love with all who have ears to hear and have an open heart
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the biggest forms of resilience comes from pushing through and honoring yourself even if you feel like you have made a mistake. Even if you feel like you have let yourself down or let someone you care about down. Even if you feel that you have crossed a boundary within yourself or another. Resilience, in this way, encourages us to be gentle and honor ourselves, with grace, when we fall short. It also encourages us to continue to pursue our end goal. To dust oneself off and continue with new boldness. The biggest form of resilience comes from continuing to honor your path with each day.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I just love bringing people together and helping people to connect and feel/ express through music
Plus, there is no feeling like the feeling of being on stage. There is something so life giving to be connected with your body, your band mates, and to share the raw beauty of music for a live audience.
