We recently connected with Jessica Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents had my oldest sister Angela, she modeled the strong work ethics and education that my mother had modeled for her. My mother insured that my sister and I were exposed to different cultures, ideas, and ways of life. Lastly my father has taught me not to be afraid of hard work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began doing hair in the 6th grade because I enjoyed various styles. I began practicing on family and classmates. Over time I perfected my craft when I was blessed with 4 new models who were open to try the new things. I’m known as a braider, but I also provide sheek hair styles using a variety source of hair. Recently I’ve created my own blend of oil and my clients rave that it stops their itching and add sheen to their hair. My claim to fame is that I do not stop until I help my clients achieve their desired look. In fact I’m able to help clients conceal hair loss including alopecia.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth and people seeing my work out in public.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A difficult lesson that I had to learn is not to accept people at their word. I would schedule appointments without requiring a deposit only to have them be a no show. Those experiences created financial issues for my business. Blocked time prevented me from earning income.
