We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Garcia-Abello. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
This was probably the most challenging thing for me to do… I don’t like to ask for help and I love staying in my comfort zone, so when the day came for me to get out there, show what I was doing and ask for a share or a like it was really hard and probably delayed a lot of business opportunities for me. But I can honestly say that along the way I have found the most amazing, loving, and supporting friends and family members.
Jessica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been in love with crafts and personalized gifts since I was a little girl but as an adult, I pursued a career in the medical field; that was until I became a wife and soon after a mother to 3 beautiful children. My husband and I decided that it was best for me to stay home with our kids until they start school and so I did. Although I love being present for my children, it can be overwhelming at times. One day I decided to invest in a cutting machine to get a little distracted by learning and making a variety of items such as T-shirts, tumblers, blankets, paper crafts, and more. Soon after, my hobbies became a lucrative business.
It has been challenging to be a stay home working mom… Sometimes it feels like I don’t get enough sleep, enough food, or enough coffee! lol
I had to teach myself how to balance my home and business, how to prioritize, how to budget, and how to actually run a business because when you are working from home there’s no scheduled paycheck coming in, there’s no clocking in or out so your working days can easily turn into 18+ hours without pay.
I am bilingual in English and Spanish, which has been super beneficial to my business since it provides extra help for my Spanish-speaking clientele, and I am able to make the same crafts or gifts in Spanish when requested. This is one thing that has set me apart from everybody else but also the fact that I take time to know my clients and in doing so I am able to help serve them better when it comes to a gift or an order.
I am very proud of my business, my support system, and myself. I have taken so many classes and spent so many hours learning and perfecting my crafts so that I can help with almost any requested order.
I would like any and all clients that order from me to know that no matter how big or small their order is, they will always be treated with kindness and that I will try my very best to go above and beyond to fulfill their requests.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The book Grace, Not Perfection. Embracing Simplicity, Celebrating Joy by Emily Ley had such a huge impact on my life and work ethic. It helped me understand that I simply cannot have it or do it all. It helped me be more organized and realistic with my time and standards. I started giving myself grace for the things I was able to accomplish that eventually brought me a lot of joy, it was then that I stopped expecting perfection from myself and everything that I thought I had to do.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
At first, I started sharing everything from my business page on my personal page and I was doing this daily. Then I started joining Facebook groups and promoting my business there as well every day. I also started doing some giveaways and pop-up events. Now, I also make reels and TikTok’s to help bring more audience to my business.
