We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Frigon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
There are many things that will contribute to the overall success one will experience in business, but I will narrow it down to my top three.
One: It is critical to identify and be deeply connected to your “why”. Keeping this at the forefront will ensure the decisions and pivots you make remain in line with your ultimate goal(s) and vision. Business comes with a rollercoaster ride of extreme highs and lows and what will get you through the lows is your “why”. It will help you to continue moving forwards when challenges come or help you get back on track when you get a bit lost.
Two: Your mindset is absolutely key. The entrepreneurial journey is less about business and strategy but moreso about personal development. It will bring to surface limiting beliefs, past trauma and such, some of which you may not have been aware of that must be healed in order to achieve the goals you set for yourself and your business. You must dedicate time on a consistent basis to focus on this and establish habits and behaviours that will set you up for success daily.
Three: Developing a strong operational foundation is essential to the success you will experience in business. Many overlook operations and focus primarily on sales and marketing but without the infrastructure in place to support the results these initiatives will produce will only lead to chaos, overwhelm and most likely a poor delivery of client service. All of which ends in an inability to continue let alone scale sustainably.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business at a time when I was utterly lost and low. I had put many dreams on hold for several years to support my family during a critical health crisis which eventually led me to a deep burnout. I felt that I needed to do something for myself but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I decided to pick up an old dream and see where it would take me.
It organically became my healing journey with many pivots along the way. I went from a wedding blog to featuring real life love stories to then sharing about self-love and personal development. I fell in love with my blog and podcast and realized I wanted to turn it into a business with offers that helped others in some way but had no idea what that could be.
Fortunately, I came across a service provider, invited her to join me as a guest on my podcast and learned about the OBM world and my mind was blown! I had no idea that what I did in corporate could be offered as a service in the online space.
That was the moment everything clicked and once I launched my new services my business took off. I booked my first client within 3 days of launching, landed a large speaking opportunity for over 450 Real Estate Agents and then booked out my services all within 3 months.
It was a long journey to get here but worth every minute!
I now help home and lifestyle brands scale sustainably, increase revenue and build teams with confidence by systemizing their operations. I take a holistic approach and optimize how they operate throughout their entire business in order to prepare them to successfully grow and scale with ease.
I’m proud of the work I do as it helps incredible visionaries focus more of their time and energy on their zone of genius rather than the day-to-day which helps them better serve their clients and communities!
Have you ever had to pivot?
Once I launched my OBM services I began noticing that I was resisting selling and promoting my highest level service which was my OBM Retainer package. I would down-sell clients into a different service which eliminated a component that I later realized I had zero interest in doing. But as an OBM, I felt I had to follow industry norms and offer the standard services.
That is NOT the case. I learned that this was MY business and I got to choose how I wanted to serve and in what way. I did not have to follow what others in the industry were doing. My clients are better served when I tailor my services to how I work best so that I can deliver exceptionally well and show up as my best self.
Managing a client’s business was not something I was interested in. I realized that I work best in project mode with a maximum timeline of 3-6 months. I prefer to be in and out of a business in a short period while making a high impact.
This experience taught me that I can do things my way – I can be creative with what I offer, how I serve, what I deliver and that has changed everything.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The majority of my clients are either repeat or referrals from past clients.
I often see this as a missed opportunity with businesses when it comes to growing a client base. Imagine not having to continuously sell to and attract new leads. New leads should essentially be a bonus!
To create a high referral and repeat client base that makes up a high percentage of your revenue you must deliver an exceptional service and you must build a strong relationship with your client during your contracted time together in addition to nurturing the relationship post contract.
