We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Fligg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to be an artist from a very young age. I would spend hours entertaining myself with my sketchbook. When I was about 5 yrs old my parents gifted my Great Grandmother and I with charcoal and sketchbooks. The two of us would draw all week. When we visited her we would exchange our drawings and talk about them. It was such a special time for me. Creating has been a common thread my whole life. I have a thirst for figuring out how to make things. From mixing the perfect shade of green to building frames. Adventure has also been a key part of inspiration. Not only what I see but the experiences I have. I grew up hiking and camping with my family so I fell into plein air painting naturally. I keep a notebook with me to jot down notes, thoughts, and poems. I use this as inspiration in the studio. Long story short, from when I was little I knew I wanted to be an artist.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always created. Even when I was working a job other then art I created. I have a passion for painting plein air and using my experiences and adventure to fuel my work. I build connections with my art. I work at bringing to life the feeling of a place and time for my clients. I also teach workshops and classes. This is a way to inspire others to grow and create. I look at art as a legacy and I find sharing my knowledge with others very fulfilling. While most of my work is landscape based, I also paint portraits, and do printmaking. I offer many different products from original art and prints to hand bound journals and magnets that features my work. I put my heart into each creation.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As a creative my mind is always thinking about the next project. The world is full of information and inspiration. As an artist I distill it down to a piece of art. We all have our own unique view. To be able to express that view is a journey. Most people only see a part of that journey. There are countless hours of prep, planning, experimenting, and reworking behind each piece

For me the most rewarding part of being an artist is when a piece finally comes together and those aha moments when something finally clicks.
