Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Cousin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Family businesses can be both very rewarding, but at the same time challenging. In order for a family business to be successful, there needs to be a sense of trust, shared vale, as well as vision. When all members involved are aligned, it creates a strong foundation to build upon. Some pitfalls could be not seeing eye to eye when it comes to personal and business relationships, separating emotions from business, and then possible struggles when it comes to leadership and power. These challenges can be mitigated by setting clear boundaries and expectations from the beginning.
As for wanting my child(ren) to join my business- it would depend. Of course I would love to work alongside my child but only if their interests and ambitions aligned with what the business was doing. While it would be great for them to get the experience of entrepreneurship, I would want them to enjoy the work that they are doing, so it doesn’t feel so much like work. I would also want it be something they are passionate about and could themselves doing it long-term to carry on the legacy.
I have a personal past experience with working with my daughter. We started a candle business during COVID, but the passion was more with me than her, and it showed. When it was time to work, it wasn’t anything she really wanted to do so it wasn’t enjoyable for her and she would often do things to avoid work. I think she more so liked the idea of the business but not doing the work when it wasn’t something she was truly into, which led to me doing everything on my own.
Currently, my parents own a photobooth and their business is thriving. My two brothers own a videography and photography company, and they work great together as well. Being that all of our services serve the event industry, we try to work together as much as possible. We all provide partnership discounts to clients, with the hopes of them choosing all of our services being that we all love working together.
Ultimately, success in a family business requires shared visions, aligned values, trust, and open communication.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, everyone! I am Jessica, a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, a teacher, a cheer coach, and a wedding planner! Yes, I wear many hats and LOVE doing all of them.
As an educator, PLANNING is my life. Outside of planning daily lessons, and school events, I assist with planning family events as well. Two years ago, I planned my 35th birthday party which turned into a surprise proposal for me! Planning my party really sparked a fire in me which led me to planning my daughter’s 13th Sneaker Ball Party that following February and then my own wedding in June 2024, and I loved every bit of it!
It was really my husband’s idea for me to start wedding planning once I had gotten going with planning our wedding. He saw that it all came so naturally for me when I jumped into planning. He was blown away by my organization with all the tables, and spreadsheets, and documents that I created to keep everything aligned and flowing properly. He immediately said, “Yep, you should do this.” It took a couple of months of convincing me to really take it on outside of our own wedding planning, but I eventually gave in and I am loving every bit of it.
When I’m not planning weddings and events, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love going out to eat and trying new restaurants, travelling, trying my hand at floral arrangements, and sleeping.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a 14 year educator, I have had to pivot SEVERAL times, sometimes multiple times in a day. One of the biggest pivots I had to make as an educator was during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools transitioned to remote learning almost overnight. Suddenly, traditional lesson plans had to be reimagined for a digital format, and keeping students engaged in a virtual setting became a major challenge.
To adapt, I quickly learned new technology platforms, incorporate interactive activities like virtual breakout rooms and online assessments, and found creative ways to maintain a sense of community. Instead of relying solely on lectures, I shifted to project-based learning and encouraged students to collaborate using digital tools.
The experience taught me the importance of flexibility, innovation, and meeting students where they are. While it was a challenging transition, it ultimately made me a more adaptable and tech-savvy educator.
Being able to pivot and remain flexible in the event planning business is super important as well. Even though everything has been planned out down to the minute, you never know what may happen that may throw timing off, so you always have to be ready with a backup plan.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
