We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Cavin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Alright, Jessica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I go back and forth on this one. I wish I would have been doing this since high school to be able to see where I could be now, but often times I wonder if I had started later, would I have done it differently? When I picked up my first camera is was only to be one of those moms who wanted to take better photos of her kids. My husband told me I needed to get a hobby and so I got one! I was recently married, had just had a baby and started practicing on her and my close friends. I was a stay at home mom and was really enjoying learning all things manual mode. I think that if I might have started later, I might have looked into more education and more about being an actual business. When I started as a hobbyist, I didn’t take the time to learn more on the business side since I was just doing it for fun. Had I waited, I feel like I might have looked into the business aspects of it more.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, a little about me, I am Jessica, 36 years old, married and have 4 kiddos ranging from 6 to 15. I enjoy all things pink, sparkly, and am a basic girl who loves her iced coffee. I am a family girl and mostly a homebody! When it comes to my business, I specialize in maternity, birth, and family photography. I love cake smashes too! Birth is my truest passion and would only photograph them all day everyday if I could. The real raw emotion that comes from a birth story is something that cannot be described and is so pure for each story I tell. I have a beautiful 3 room studio located in the West Bottoms of Kansas City and offer a client closet available for use. I am most proud of how far I’ve come with my work and how I try to continue my education as there is always room for improvement!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth referrals have definitely been the best source for me. I like to think my personality and people skills help my clients feel comfortable with me and that makes them want to return and have their friends and family work with me too.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that comparison is a thief of joy. I used to compare myself to every other photographer in the world and realized that I am not them. I don’t know their workflow and their education. That I needed to stop comparing my work to theirs and just be authentic and try to set myself apart in an oversaturated market.
