We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Carter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I have worked on has been the recent release of my prayerbook, A Time to GLOW: Prayers for the GLOWING Woman. It is my very first book, which I self-published through Amazon on Christmas 2022. About two years ago, the LORD placed “Share the GLOW” in my heart; which is ultimately an entire movement. Share the GLOW stands for Share the Growth, Love, Opportunities, and Wins. The big vision is for Share the GLOW to be a corporation some day. It is my desire for women to see themselves the way God sees them as well as learn how to magnify their light to do great things. With that being said, A Time to GLOW is an extension of that movement. Of course, this grand vision did not come without my own personal challenges. So this prayerbook consists of 30 personal prayers that have carried me through dark seasons along with a back story on where I was at the time, and why I was praying.
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a southern, country girl from Birmingham, Alabama. I had an amazing childhood with both of my parents. I got married in 2015 and moved to Seattle, WA. I got divorced in 2018 due to domestic violence and continued my journey on the west coast, solo, until I made the decision to move to Phoenix, AZ in 2021. My divorce was a hard thing to get through and I experienced a lot of brokenness as a result. That is what ignited the fire within me to seek out my purpose and destiny. After all, I thought I had it all planned out: high school, college, graduate school, marriage, children, home, etc. So when things within my life did not go according to plan, I had to rediscover myself all over again. That was when I made the declaration that my brokenness would not define my destiny. I knew if I continued to put in the soul work, my “glow” will shine brighter than ever. That was the drive behind Share the GLOW. I started to understand what it meant for me to become my true self and solidify my identity through the eyes of God, so I wanted to help other women do the same. With that being said, I have my A Time to GLOW: Prayers for the GLOWING Woman prayerbook available on Amazon. There is a light in every woman that’s meant to shine and not be hidden. I believe that no matter who you are, there is power in your story and power in what you share. I turned my imperfections and emotional scars into the joy I always desired. Once I made the decision to share my GLOW, the things that hindered me became powerless. With scriptural references in each prayer of the book as well as me guiding you on how to pray, you will be able to: See yourself the way God sees you and build an authentic relationship with Him
Pray with intentionality
Deal with forgiveness issues
Maintain a spirit of excellence when what’s around you is less than excellent
Build confidence and accept your truth in God
GLOW with the light of Christ
I am also a Social Media coach. My clientele consist of those who are looking to establish their online identity and overcome their fears of posting content. I believe that social media is an extension of who we are. So I coach clients on transferring their authenticity to social media platforms. I focus on quality content that is authentic to the individual. The goal is never followers/likes; those will come when the quality and authenticity are established. In today’s world, many are focused on gaining followers. Yet, they end up getting caught in a never-ending hamster wheel of keeping up with social media trends, crazy algorithms, etc. Although I educate my clients on the current algorithm, it is mainly for knowledge sake. From there, we work out a long term plan for their social media that they can stick with because it’s true to THEM and they will feel confident doing so.
Social media coaching in itself is also an extension of Share the GLOW. For example, the O stands for Opportunities. So my goal is not marketing, but education. Our light shines the brightest when we remain in authentic spaces, so social media should not be any different. As passionate as I am about women sharing their glow and putting their best self forward, I am just as passionate about how it is portrayed on social media. I gained a huge following on Instagram and TikTok by remaining authentic to who I am. I post fun, funny, and relative content that matches my personality. I was not trying to gain a following. As a matter of fact, I didn’t care if I did. Although I am grateful for the influence God has graced me with, it is still not my motivational force. My GLOW, which is Jesus, takes precedence. Through Him, anything less than authentic to me, does not get posted. So I ensure those who work with me do not get sucked into the obsession of social media nor feel like they have to keep up with everything. The center of who I am as well as what I do is not based on how well I keep things together, but the confidence I show in being vulnerable.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started playing around on TikTok in February of 2020. Once the pandemic started, I began investing more time into it; considering I was at home all day. I just started having fun and posting videos. A few weeks later, one of my videos went viral. Then I got contacted by TikTok to be featured in their national commercial. That was what kicked off my following to another level. Then, another video shortly after went viral. That video was me showing different outfits for a first date. That got almost 2 million views. Like I mentioned before, it’s important to be authentic to who you are. You never want to gain a following from something that is not true to you, because that will not last. It’s easier to go viral today than it has ever been. So don’t overexert yourself trying to do so. Stay consist with what works for you and your growing audience will remain loyal to you.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the freedom I have to be myself. You simply cannot put creativity in a box; it’s whatever you want it to be. There are endless possibilities for me to let my hair down and have fun.
