We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Bosman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Desert Moon 25 has a unique and meaningful name for us. We had already started our journey in soap making before we moved to the desert. After having many friends and family try our soap we decided to start selling it. Which is where the ‘Desert’ portion came from.
We have a toddler who loves the moon. When he was 2 he would always go outside at night to stare at the moon and wish it goodnight. I have always loved the night sky and in the desert we have such a wonderful view almost every single night. This is where ‘Moon” came from.
Now 25 is a little random but also makes sense. I wanted to add a number to make it unique but also a purpose. The purpose was so we could have our own website, and the first two portions of the moon were not available. With a little research we discovered that 25% of California is made of desert. So since we started the journey and business in California in the desert, it was a perfect fit.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I started using essential oils there were certain tools I wanted to gift my new customers. But I was having trouble finding what I had envisioned, so I decided to make my own designs in my view. This is where my brand was born! Finding the time to put my creative ideas into action. March of 2020 I used Etsy as my platform for sharing my creations and it has grown into something I am so proud of. A lot of my designs are created with oil enthusiasts in mind, but also home decor for the modern boho and farmhouse lovers.
Then I learned about making soap at home. Adding just the basic ingredients to give me a nice clean feeling without synthetics. Plus being able to add things like clays, exfoliants and scents to my specific needs. It got me thinking about others who suffer from skin issues that need a more natural approach to care for their skin. Which has brought me to making soap, candles and lotion candles! I have found it is my passion and I love finding new ways to design my soap. Being able to get more natural products into the homes of anyone who desires, makes it all worthwhile!
I have always been an artist. From photography, clay, painting and finding new life in old things. Thank you for choosing my designs and products to fit your needs! I am continuing to add more self care products as my mind flows. I also do custom orders and laser engraved keepsakes. The possibilities are endless when you have an open mind for art.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
While our audience is still small they are mighty. We strive for organic in more aspects than just our products but in our audience as well. Asking what they would like to see or learn about and sharing that information. Giving them the opportunity to learn about natural products and their benefits. We even try to help those who have certain skin conditions but do not know how to go about a natural way of care.
always being honest with our customers and audience so as to create a true friendship. That is what our audience is, a friendship. By supporting each other and providing knowledge. At Desert Moon 25 we also share and support other small businesses, even ones that have the same products. Learning and growing together is something we are very passionate about.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When we started with candles we thought it was easy and started testing. Once we thought we had it down, we started to give them to friends to try out. While they loved them, they also did not perform as well as we had hoped. We went back to the drawing board and started testing again. This time we realized that our original form of testing was not completely accurate. Mistakes are made but we learn from them, you may lose product and inventory but in the end quality is worth it.
Now going at a slower pace and checking all the fine details, we now have an amazing candle we are so proud of. Our customers love them as well. Note taking is also a great way to see where things go wrong or if you have missed something that needs to be addressed. So by starting over we allowed ourselves to unlearn the way we originally tested and started testing properly to get the best results.
