Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Bidonde. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Jessica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think there are a lot of challenges in the world for creatives. In America, specifically, we like order, structure and proven paths. We like productivity, efficiency and putting things in a box. These are the antithesis for any creative. We need freedom from societal structures to create art and that is not something innate in American culture. I do think that it is changing – but there’s still room for improvement. On the other hand, we have AI. I understand that it is a useful tool for many people, but it bugs me as a writer. I would rather collaborate to create the copy a client needs. I fear we will take the human and creative element out of art. I think we need to protect human-made art and keep safe spaces for artists.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think the biggest issue non-creatives have with creatives is that they don’t understand what we are doing or how it works. We don’t operate on a set schedule. Projects vary in lengths of time. We can pivot on a whim because of inspiration. These things feel really unstable to non-creatives. I wish I could better articulate that it’s not instability but rather a different type of process. There’s a method to our madness. There’s also a real need for non-creatives to understand how we monetize our art. It seems to be a measure of success for them and I wish they would understand that we do not make art for money. We do it because it’s inside of us and must come out. That’s very hard to get someone to understand unless they have experienced it.
