We recently connected with Jessica Bell and have shared our conversation below.
Jessica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
So my first official order was in Fayetteville NC and I had to make a softball cake. Listen I was SO proud of that cake, we went out to celebrate at Targets lol. It was not only first official order but it was also my first order from my website. I was so happy for the opportunity that I’m sure I was floating around like gravity didn’t exist.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Food has always been something I’ve loved since middle school. I decided to specialize in the pastry area, more so cakes, because of my own childhood. At the time I started, I had never had a cake nor a party for my birthday. So I wanted to create happy memories in an edible way that would be etch not only in your mind but also in your tastebuds. I create unique centerpieces for different occasions, but for my kid client I add a toy(keepsake), based on the theme, so that whenever they see the toy, they’ll remember not only their party but the people that came out to celebrate their special day. It might not be a big deal to some, however I feel if I can create a positive memory in that child’s mind, that I am doing something right.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I would say it’s when my clients give me creative control on their cake design. To get the details of the theme, the occasion, colors, etc and take all of that and come up with something new that I have the freedom to be as EXTRA as I want is the best feeling ever. It’s been so many times that I have surprised myself on making my thoughts/imagination actually come to life in cake form. Then to see the reactions is even more satisfying to see.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Avalon Cakes School is one of the best sites to push your creativity to another level, if that’s your thing. When I first came across their website, I thought I had won a golden ticket. The sweet designers they have shows you how to achieve different levels of quality work. They have professional cookie designers, to a sculpting designers, and even the basics of stacking cake properly. I think that anyone in this industry, no matter your level, can benefit one way or another from this website.
