We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jessica Abegg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica , thanks for joining us today. Everyone has crazy stuff happen to them, but often small business owners and creatives, artists and others who are doing something off the beaten path are hit with things (positive or negative) that are so out there, so unpredictable and unexpected. Can you share a crazy story from your journey?
One of the best experiences in my life happened as a direct result of me being a realtor. I’m fifth generation Denverite, and my family has been in the area since before Colorado was even a state. My great-grandmother, a famous author in her day, purchased a duplex in South City Park during the Great Depression. Someone in my family has lived on either side of the duplex for nearly 100 years. Last year, my cousins reached out to me to bring their mother’s side of the duplex to the market after she passed, and we worked together on marketing, pricing, and listing strategy. The very next day my own life circumstances shifted, and I reached out to my cousins about buying the duplex myself. Now I have the property to pass on to my own children, and get to keep this ancestral treasure in the family. Had I not had my business, the property likely would have been sold to a stranger and the opportunity completely lost.

Jessica , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been fascinated about Denver real estate since I was a kid. I remember telling my parents “Mom, Dad, can we go to that open house down the street? Those people bought that house for (and I’m dating myself here) $100,000, and now they’re selling it for $130,000 2 years later! Let’s go see!”. My family’s own fortune was made and lost in Denver real estate, so I love being a part of other people’s success stories in building inter-generational wealth through real estate in my town. What I’m most proud of in my work is that I focus on and build lifetime-relationships with clients and the love stories of their homes, not just on the one time transaction, as many others do.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m a story teller by nature and a love machine, so most of my social media presence is in telling the story of my clients and their homes. I celebrate my client’s perseverance, faith in the process, grace under fire, and ultimate success stories.
Using social media as a platform to cheer others on has always been beneficial in my brand building. I also use it to tell the story of my city. Every month I host a walking tour in different neighborhood’s around the city, and share the stories of Denver we uncover on these tours through social media.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
COVID was a major pivot point in real estate, but not the one we were expecting. At the advent of the pandemic, most realtors were like “oh well, there goes real estate. It was fun while it lasted.” But paradoxically the opposite thing happened, as millions upon millions of people around the world have realized they can work almost anywhere they have an internet connection. Already incredibly popular, Denver exploded its influx of people wanting to live in an amazing city with access to nature, culture, and community. My business has grown and grown throughout the pandemic as a result of this, and I’ve had to level up on systems of service and operations.
