We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessi Mason. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessi below.
Jessi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been writing songs since I was a little kid, which ultimately really helped me. I think when you start learning something at a young age, there’s so much more freedom to explore. You haven’t developed that critical inner voice telling you you’re not good enough, it’s total creative exploration. I was able to develop my songwriting like that, and I’m very grateful that I started so early. I’m currently teaching myself to produce, I’ve started building out a little home studio and everything. I’m finding that it’s more complicated to learn new things as an adult – there are so many emotional, self-imposed obstacles that I need to work around while also learning the technical craft. It’s exciting and challenging, but I’m taking it slow so I don’t get discouraged.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jessi Mason, know musically as Maisyn, I’m a singer/songwriter/artist. I’ve been releasing music since I was in high school, and it’s been a really winding and remarkable journey. I’m incredibly lucky to do what I do.
I’d say my music is a combination of my early-2000s pop radio influences with my Laurel Canyon, 70s songwriter influences. I love Taylor Swift, and I also love Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen. I hope people can hear that in my music.
I released my first EP under the name Maisyn in 2021. The debut single and title track “Cool Grl” got placed on Spotify Fresh Finds and Spotify Fresh Finds: Pop playlists which was a really validating moment for me. I’m a completely independent artist – I don’t have a manager, label, agenct, etc – so the little wins really keep me going. I released two new singles this year, “Naked” and “Long Hair”, and there’s a lot more music coming in 2024 that I’m very excited about.
As a songwriter, I love writing with other artists as well. I find it extremely rewarding to help people shape narratives and tell their stories. Most of my friends are amazing artists that I love to write with – Kate Grahn, Madeleine Mayi, Casey Tutton, just to name a few. I’ve also done some work writing with EDM artists, I release music in that genre under the name Juneau. I like having different monikers for different projects, it allows me to get into the different tones and creative mindsets. It’s like putting on a different costume when you have to play a different character.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Something I’ve had to think about a lot as an artist is the question “what am I trying to say?” If listeners could walk away with one message from my music, I would hope that it’s this – life can be difficult, but everything will be ok. I often write music with messages that I need to reinforce to myself, and this is something I’m always repeating. I need affirmations, I need proof that there’s healing and love and joy in this world, so I put it my music. I write plenty of sad songs too, obviously there’s a whole spectrum of emotions to feel and write about, but I think as an artist I always come back to hope.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
To pursue anything creative I think you really need to unwrite any stories you’ve told yourself that hold you back. I’ve had to really unpack my beliefs that I wasn’t cool enough, or I wasn’t pretty enough, or I wasn’t skilled enough to succeed in music. Everyone has insecurities, it’s human, but they can’t overpower your desire to grow.
