We were lucky to catch up with Jessenia Collazo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessenia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Leaving a stable job can be one of the scariest risks to take, especially when you’re a single mother trying to balance career and family. For 13 years, I worked as a paralegal, a role that defined my professional identity and provided for my family. But as the pandemic unfolded in 2021, my priorities shifted dramatically.
With my son’s father moving two hours away, I was left to navigate school drop-offs and pick-ups solo. When we were called back to the office full-time, I knew something had to change. My workplace had allowed me to work an altered schedule, enabling me to manage my responsibilities as a mother. However, after months of making it work, my supervisor informed me that the arrangement was no longer feasible.
That conversation felt like a tipping point. I had been contemplating resigning for some time, and hearing that my efforts to balance work and home were unwelcome was the final nudge I needed. It confirmed my doubts about staying in a job that didn’t fit my evolving life.
So, I decided to take the plunge. I submitted my two weeks’ notice, and to my surprise, my managing attorney reacted with skepticism when I shared my plans to start my own businesses. That was disheartening, but I realized that his doubts were a reflection of his perspective, not mine. I knew I had the skills, determination, and creativity to forge a new path.
With my notice submitted, I dove into entrepreneurship. I launched RSVP Events Company and also took on managing a pest control business. The transition wasn’t easy, but the freedom to set my own schedule has been liberating. I now have the flexibility to prioritize my son while still pursuing my professional goals.
Fast forward to today, and I’m thriving in ways I never imagined. I’ve built a successful event planning business, all while being present for my son. The risk I took wasn’t just about leaving a job; it was about reclaiming my life. I learned that stepping out of my comfort zone opened doors I never knew existed. The experience taught me that sometimes, the most daunting risks lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into the world of event planning began during the COVID-19 pandemic when I joined my sister’s small business, “The Picnic Fairy & Co.” in January 2021. While still working as a full-time litigation paralegal, I dedicated my evenings and weekends to preparing and setting up picnics for clients across South Florida. This experience opened my eyes to my true passion for event planning, allowing me to draw upon the organizational skills and attention to detail that I honed over my years in law.
As I immersed myself in this new role, I discovered the joy of bringing people together to celebrate life’s special moments. It became clear that this was not just a side gig for me—it was a calling. This led me to take the leap and establish my own business, RSVP Events Company, where I specialize in weddings and other memorable occasions.
At RSVP Events Company, we offer a full suite of event planning and management services. From intimate gatherings to grand weddings, I ensure every detail is flawlessly executed. I also oversee operations for The Picnic Fairy in South Florida, further expanding my reach in the industry. I take pride in the successful organization of several weddings and a memorable Sweet 16 celebration, each uniquely tailored to reflect the personalities and visions of my clients.
One of the key problems I solve for my clients is the overwhelming task of coordinating various vendors and logistics. Many people often find it daunting to juggle multiple responsibilities while planning an event. My team and I step in to handle day-of coordination and decoration, allowing clients to relax and enjoy their special day. Additionally, I provide a personalized touch by adapting to different styles and preferences, ensuring that every event feels unique and reflective of the client’s vision. My flexibility and knowledge of the industry empower me to navigate any challenges that arise, ensuring a seamless experience.
I am particularly proud of my ability to adapt to diverse styles and personalities. I believe that listening to my clients is crucial; understanding their vision helps me bring their dreams to life. I am committed to continuous learning, always seeking to improve my skills and stay updated on industry trends.
For potential clients, I want you to know that my brand embodies elegance, luxury, and organization. I pride myself on being timely and involved, ensuring that I am accessible throughout the planning process. My goal is to create not just events, but experiences that leave lasting memories. When you work with RSVP Events Company, you’re not just hiring a planner; you’re gaining a partner dedicated to making your vision a reality.
Ultimately, I believe what sets me apart is my genuine passion for what I do and my commitment to forging meaningful relationships with my clients. I am excited to continue this journey, helping others celebrate their most cherished moments with style and grace.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my audience on social media has been a rewarding journey that began with consistent effort and a genuine desire to connect with my community. I started by posting frequently to keep my content fresh and engaging. I also made it a priority to follow other local businesses in the event planning space, creating a network of support and collaboration.
One of the key strategies I discovered was the power of instructional posts. I found that my followers loved seeing content that educated them about event planning, whether it was tips for organizing a wedding, decor ideas, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of me in action. Sharing these insights not only showcased my expertise but also built trust with my audience. People appreciate learning something new, and by providing valuable information, I was able to foster a loyal following.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has truly helped me build my reputation within the event planning market is the way I make my clients feel. I believe that a personal touch goes a long way, and when clients feel valued and understood, they naturally become advocates for my business. Word of mouth has been a powerful tool for me, as satisfied clients share their positive experiences with friends and family, helping my reputation grow organically.
I strive for consistency in my work, ensuring that every event I take on reflects the same high standards. Being informed and involved throughout the planning process reassures clients that they are in capable hands. They appreciate knowing they are not just another booking on my calendar; I take the time to remember their names, listen to their visions, and execute their ideas with care.
I also believe in setting realistic expectations. I’m honest about what I can and cannot do, providing my professional opinion when necessary. This transparency builds trust, and clients feel confident that I have their best interests at heart. My ultimate goal is to make their event the best it can be, and I take pride in succeeding in that mission time and again.
Additionally, I actively seek feedback after each event, using it as a valuable tool for improvement. By being receptive to clients’ thoughts, I can refine my approach and continuously enhance the experience I provide.
Overall, the combination of personal connection, transparency, and a commitment to excellence has been instrumental in establishing my reputation. I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built, and I believe that my clients’ trust and satisfaction are the cornerstones of my success.
