Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessella Gaymon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jessella thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up I loved any type of art you can think of from painting, drawing, coloring, crafts, you name it. Every holiday that came my parents would buy my paint, crayons, art brief cases, construction paper, anything you can think of. During my childhood technology was not as huge as it is today. As technology began to develop my passion for the arts drifted away. There were moments I would feel a spark to be creative but the spark would die out after a short period of time.
At the beginning of the pandemic I enrolled to North Carolina Central University in Fall 2020 as a Criminal Justice majoring with the passion to be an FBI Agent. During my first two year I felt a disconnect with myself and what I want to do long term. As the pandemic died down and everyone transitioned back to “normal” organizations on my campus begun to look for creatives to help promote school events. One of my long life friends encouraged me to join Student Activities Board to help with the Marketing and Promotions aspect regarding student engagement. I began creating graphics for events, homecoming, campaigns, and so much more. I even convinced my mom to purchase my first camera. The same semester she purchased my canon camera and I began a creative business The Visionary Trap.
I realized I had a passion in media (graphic designs, photography, videography, content creation, story telling) about half way through college. After talking with friends, mentors, and family I changed my major to Mass Communications the following semester. With me changing my major it caused me graduate “late” but it has also given me the opportunity to network and discover who I am and what I want in life. After working on my craft for a year I started to dive into what I want my career to look like. That process includes me going to conventions, networkings, and pitching myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Jessella “Jessie” Gaymon a Mass Communications student at North Carolina Central University. At the beginning of the pandemic I enrolled to North Carolina Central University in Fall 2020 as a Criminal Justice majoring with the passion to be an FBI Agent. I realized I had a passion in media (graphic designs, photography, videography, content creation, story telling) about half way through college. Following my discovery I began creating all types of media. I began my business The Visionary Trap where I offer photography, videography, and graphic designs services.
While I started building my business I was also creating content for my personal page (@honeytrapshawty). That content consisted of series about college, cleaning my pool, day in the life, and so much more. I am very proud of the growth I made with building my business and personal page branding. Every piece of work I create I am always nervous to show case but the amount of support I received over the years has pushed me beyond my limits. My work sets me apart from others because of my authenticity, personality, and transparency. I am often complemented on my authenticity in my work and personality. Everything I do is about the experience for my me and my client not just the money or where it can take me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Truthfully I did not blow up over night and till this day I am not one of those famous content creators. Everything I have built for myself took time and consistency. When I first started I was not sure what type of content or presence I wanted to given my social media. I went through multiple trials and errors and still do. I began making content for organizations at my school and pivoted to my own content which included, day in the life, clean my pool with me series, college journey series, and more. I had so much support in everything I created which pushed me farther to create more.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having the ability to bring my vision to life and connect with others through my work. Whether it’s through one of my videos online or capturing moments through photography and videography, I love how creativity allows me to tell stories, express emotions, and inspire others. Seeing how my work resonates with people and creates a sense of community is what truly fulfills me. It’s amazing to know that my ideas can spark conversations, bring joy, or even encourage someone else to embrace their own creativity.
