We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesse Mansfield. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesse below.
Jesse, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risk I’ve taken was leaving my job of seven years and to start my own private practice. It felt so uncomfortable to be walking away from the certainty of a guaranteed income and not being able to pay for the new house I had recently started renting, but I was dating someone (my now wife, Brigitte Tolson) who was well established in her career and afforded her the opportunity to take vacations whenever she wanted, and still be able to have full control of her schedule. I knew this decision wouldn’t come lightly but I knew it was time for something new on the horizon for Jesse Mansfield. My life was about getting out of comfort zone, that’s how I met my wife; I made a choice that would forever affect my future and embarked on a solo trek across America, visiting all the famous national parks that I’d seen on TV when I was kid. While being in solitude, I learned to truly enjoy the company of myself, and find self acceptance and love. After I left my stable job to start my own practice, things started to magically fall into place financially, spiritually and in my relationships. I developed more of a trust in the Universe to guide me through life, and my relationship with myself continues to evolve and get better.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I entered the massage industry over 13 years ago when I made personal decision to distance myself from toxic substances and relationships that were heading in the wrong direction, and that I knew would regret later in life. This realization came to me during a deep meditation ceremony. Suddenly, I felt a divine presence envelope me, traveling up and down my spine. I heard a whisper in my ear telling me that I no longer needed to punish myself and that I had a purpose to serve on this planet.
That purpose was to be of service to people who are in pain and need to be liberated so they can find clarity. I enrolled in massage school in 2011, and found this was my true calling and finally felt immense joy in my work and life. Several years later, I was involved in a front-end collision with a car that ran a red light at an intersection. This incident caused head trauma and severe neck pain. Following the accident, I struggled with head fog and depression due to the concussion, which hindered my motivation to engage in activities that I loved, such as running, weight lifting and rock climbing.
I consulted with numerous health practitioners and accumulated a bill of over $100,000 from doctor appointments, including physical therapist, chiropractors, pain management specialist and surgical procedures. I was deeply disappointed that despite all of this, my body was still experiencing pain. After my legal case concluded, I explored alternative therapies and discovered John F Barnes Myofascial Release Approach. I attended a seminar out in Sedona with my wife and received a treatment from expert therapist Krissy Chin at Therapy On The Rocks. I left there feeling a liberated from pain in a way I hadn’t experienced in a very long time.
Following this breakthrough, I traveled extensively across the United States attending seminars, searching for ways to free myself from pain and my clients from pain so they could continue living active lifestyles. Life is about evolving and transforming crises into opportunities for growth and celebrating our ability to cherish these bodies we are so fortunate to have. We only get one body, and I truly believe we should love it and enjoy it.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The strategy I’ve found to be the most effective in building my clientele is listening attentively, showing genuine interest and interacting with my heart. Additionally, deep diving into continuing education courses to stay current in my skills is crucial. Confidence knowing I am the best person for the job that doesn’t stem from arrogance but from a mind set that if I am striving towards being my best and remaining teachable to life circumstances. You are always going to come out in the top. Each day I strive towards being better than I was yesterday by taking action and which in return inspires others to do the same.
It’s important to offer service or product in which they can’t find anywhere else or aren’t receiving the premium quality of care that you know you can be offering them. I specialize in treating chronic and myofascial pain conditions like neck or sciatica pain for example, when I am seeing a client I look at them as a whole person and not merely a set symptoms. That’s where all the real healing happens. I’ve learned that when you genuinely want to help others, they often reciprocate by writing testimonials on my Google or Yelp page or by recommending me friends, family, or a colleagues.
Ultimately, I believe you have two choices to surrounds yourself with those who inspire you or expire you.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was early in my career I thought the people around me who had been in the field for long time were more experienced and inherently the most skilled therapists, but once I began studying myofascial release with the founder John. F Barnes, I realized that pursuing quality continuing education was the most important factor in being the best possible massage therapist. I have learned that it’s crucial to always stay teachable, and be open to feedback and new techniques. The healing arts are an ever evolving field, as there is a constant flow of new medical research that applies to our field. I value staying up to date on the latest in health science as well as holistic healing, and I prioritize taking continuing education courses around Los Angeles and the USA throughout the year, including breathwork certification and hypnotherapy certification. I am excited for future possibilities to add to my qualifications, as I know it makes me a more skilled and diverse massage therapist and healer.
