Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jesse King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jesse thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful in this industry is about the value that is offered to our clients, and their response to our services. Flooring is a major aspect of a home and it can make the world of difference when you have a beautiful quality floor. When you build a reputation and have a solid foundation of skills to showcase, clients tend to find this in our company when sourcing flooring professionals. We have amazing reviews, 18+ 5 star reviews within 1.5years of starting this business. The heartfelt testimonials noted by clients is how we define our success. Quality floors, happy clients, successful business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I stepped into hardwood flooring after my first child was born during the height of the pandemic. I joined a team and soon learned how much I enjoyed hardwood flooring and that I had skill in it. Almost two years later my family and I decided to move back to our hometown in Durango as our family was growing again and we wanted to be closer to our families and the great things Durango has to offer. My wife and I decided it was the perfect opportunity to start our own hardwood flooring business. I became a certified member of the NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association). We started Home Roots Hardwood Flooring in the summer of 2022. My wife was able to leave her job and support our company full time shortly after, as well as take care of our two children at home. I have pride that we are a family owned and operated business. We feel that it sets us apart from others in the area. While I meet with and get to know clients during the initial estimate, I also share that I am the one that will be conducting the work we discussed, which I believe they find comfort in- knowing who will be in their home doing this work. As my wife handles the administrative side of the business we have built a reputation of having great and timely communication. I trust her to communicate with people while I am on a job making floors beautiful.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My town has a yearly winter festival that is called “Snowdown”. Snowdown is a themed week long celebration that the entire town participates in. There are games, contests, parties, parades…really anything you can think of. I ran into this girl and we happened to be attracted to one another and the rest was history… she later became my wife.
She has supported me throughout the years through many different career ventures and opportunities. It was natural that she also became my business partner. We build Home Roots Hardwood from the ground up together.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When we were in the process of moving back to our home town and decided to run our own hardwood flooring company, rather working for one, we first looked into buying a business. There was a hardwood flooring business that was thinking of selling and phasing out. We liked the idea of gaining their clientele as they had been in business for many years. We had attorneys draft up the paperwork and everything. Eventually the other business decided not to dissolve themselves and to continue their work. We decided that it wasn’t meant to be and that we were to build our own company up.
