We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessa Calderon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessa below.
Alright, Jessa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was blessed to know at the age of eight that I had the ability to put a pen to paper and create with words. By then, I was writing poetry. Soon after I would start to write songs and stories. From ages eleven to twenty-two, I consistently had a back pack filled with notebooks which I used to scribbled in.
Jessa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For the music, although I began to write at a young age, I first started recording in the studio around the age of fifteen, with my brother Steve-O. Since then, I have had the blessing of working with many wonderful artists and entertainers.
I have had the honor to make beautiful music with my Dream Warriors family and Maya Jupiter to name a few.
For my book. I just decided to write it. Once it was written, I took the time to research publishing companies and chose one that felt the most fitting for me, Luminare Press. They were a real pleasure to work with.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Purchasing our merchandise is the best way to show support. Of course sharing it with your loved ones in different ways whether that be through discussion or buying our merch as gifts for loved ones. And of course helping us spread our art through social media is greatly appreciated. One other way to share your support for artists who have music out, is to listen to their music as frequently as possible.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
So often we find ourselves dreaming of the idea of being “rich and famous.” After having the blessing to experience that world for a brief moment, I realized that wasn’t the end all be all for me. It didn’t always feel good to witness and experience some of the ugliness in the background. Having full control and “ownership” over your hearts work and how you share it is much more freeing than having to potentially lose yourself upon command of your label or boss.
I would soon find that one of the ways to connect your heart work with the peoples was hosting workshop and sharing at community events. Although I still hit the big stage, I truly found a happy place in the more intimate settings.
Ultimately I am making the choices of where and how to share my heart work.
