Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jess Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jess thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Back when I was a junior in high school, I had this inkling that I wanted to dive into the world of art, but I brushed it off, thinking it was just a passing phase. Fast forward to 2019, I was grinding away at my part-time job, going through the motions, when something just clicked inside me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I didn’t want to keep living like that anymore. So, I decided to do something about it. I started saving money, taking art classes in the evenings, and putting together a (very novice) little portfolio for college applications. Applying to art school was a spur-of-the-moment decision, way out of my comfort zone, but looking back, I’m so glad I took that leap of faith. Funny enough, I owe a lot to those seemingly mundane tasks at my part-time job, they were the unexpected catalyst that pushed me to pursue my passion for art full-time.
Jess, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey there! I’m Jess Martinez, a Mexican American illustrator/designer born and raised here in sunny Los Angeles. As a first-generation American and recent college grad, I’m constantly finding myself navigating new paths. This really fuels my artistic journey and helps give my art a sense of comfort, warmth, and an the feeling of an open invitation. I’m all about blending the old with the new, infusing vintage charm with botanical flair to craft something that feels both fresh and familiar. When you look at my pieces, I want you to be captivated by the shapes, colors, and textures, drawn into a world where every detail tells a story. And when there’s a person or character in the mix, I want you to feel their essence, their way of seeing. Ultimately, my goal is simple: to craft pieces that bring a smile to your face and take you to nature.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to communicate visually. I feel extremely fortunate to live out my days as an illustrator, and every single aspect of it feels incredibly rewarding. From the way shape language can weave a narrative without a single word to the satisfaction of bringing characters to life, there’s something truly magical about it all. It’s like unlocking a secret language that sparks the imagination. And seeing how my art resonates with others? That’s the best part, reminding me every day why I fell in love with this craft in the first place.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
You know, looking back, I really wish I had realized earlier on that being a creative could actually be a viable career path. Those years I spent thinking it wasn’t an option? They’re my biggest regret. It wasn’t until later in life that I discovered I could make a living doing what I love, and it hit me: we need more art education for younger audiences. Back then, I felt like I’d missed my chance after high school, but then I had this epiphany—hey, I’m still going to be 25 someday anyway, so might as well be an illustrator while i’m at it.. A lot of the best resources now I find through my friends, tiktok and former professors. It really takes a community to move you forward.
