We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jess Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jess, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How has Covid changed your business model?
As a live events business enduring a global pandemic seemed insurmountable in March of 2020. Fast forward two and a half years and we are now able to reach folks all over the world through virtual events! This is not to say that the road has been an easy one. We had to learn new systems, become Zoom pro’s in our own right, and pivot our hosting model to one that translates to a virtual setting. In the last couple of years we’ve had the honor of hosting virtual birthday parties, baby showers, fundraisers, team happy hours, and large scale conventions. Taking time to celebrate with folks for milestones big and small is what kept us going. We started to build community outside of our hometown of Austin, TX and the world felt a little smaller in the very best way. Nowadays we are back to hosting live events but that doesn’t mean we’ve dropped our virtual model. In today’s world we’re seeing how many companies have opted for a fully remote work model, so a quarterly team-building competition fits really nicely into virtual company culture goals. Families who live all over the world have standing Zoom hangouts and when a birthday is approaching it’s a great way to mix things up on the call with a live-hosted game. We’ve even had opportunities to be video called in for a few in-person conference happy hours across the US wherein we host the game from the projector screen! Covid brought many challenges to the events world but we feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to grow our reach and bring a little competitive fun into the virtual space.
Jess, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Long before we were Get It Gals Trivia, we were just two gal pals who loved putting together trivia games for friends’ milestone celebrations. We’d curate quizzes to honor soon-to-be mamas at their baby showers, put together some cute couple’s facts at engagement parties and weddings, and do full on decade celebrations for birthday parties. At one such celebration, we had a lot of service industry folks in attendance. They were so complimentary of our questions, playlists, and energy. They expressed to us that if this was something we offered in a bar/restaurant environment, they’d be interested in hiring us. This was the first time we had even considered turning this trivia hobby into an actual side hustle. Fast forward six years and we are proud to host pub quizzes and MUZINGO games all across central Texas, as well as both virtual and in-person private events!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
When we first got started we were offering weekly themed pub quizzes an a little British pub in Austin, TX. We were growing our audience and our private event offerings but hadn’t ever considered branching out from our home-base at said pub. That is until one day the manager reached out with the unexpected news that the owners were way behind on rent and payroll and that effective immediately the pub was closed for good. We thought our trivia dream had ended. We wallowed for a few days trying to figure out what would come next. Then the most amazing thing happened, bars started reaching out TO US! They’d heard about the pub shutting down and were wondering if we would be open to bringing our unique brand of themed-trivia to their spots. That terrible day that we thought the shuttering of one business would lead to the shuttering of our own ended up opening up a world of opportunity for us wherein Get It Gals could grow from a side hustle to a full time opportunity.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
From the start we’ve had folks asking us to share our trivia questions with them so that they could host their very own house party complete with trivia, without having to worry about creating the questions or paying for one of our hosts to come to them. We had plenty of questions banked and saw this as a great opportunity for an additional revenue stream. Just like that DIY Trivia was born. We sell zip files with 5 rounds worth of trivia questions presented in slide deck format. These DIY Trivia’s come complete with funny pictures and gifs to punctuate the answers and a full sheet of themed-food, drink, decor and prize ideas. Our most popular DIY themes are definitely the decade-focused ones, I Love the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. We also offer DIY Trivia’s for a ton of fan-favorite TV shows and cult classic movies. It’s become a simple, passive revenue stream to bring our beloved trivia questions to folks all over!
