Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jesi Hooper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jesi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Becoming a content creator wasn’t something I set out to do— it’s something I kind of bloomed into.
This all started as a short-term rental for travelers, a way to support small businesses. I’ve always had a LOVE for exploring, real food, hidden gems, & unique events. Over time, that passion evolved into Nerdy Retreat– Atlanta’s go-to guide for exploring ATL like a local.
I learned through experience, trial, & error to be honest. I wanted my brand to be eclectic, weird, blunt & always off the beaten path. This city has so much to offer, & each neighborhood has its own identity.
There are plenty of creators out here, but sometimes it all feels too mainstream. Social media is constantly evolving, but instead of being like everyone else, I wanted to craft content that’s different… that sparks real conversations.
One of the most essential skills? Storytelling. SM isn’t just about posting aesthetic pictures, or throwing around “it’s a vibe” for engagement. It’s about creating real experiences that resonate.
Whether I’m showcasing an ice cream shop on Cascade, highlighting a local event like GVG, or sharing a family-friendly activity, my goal is to make my audience feel like they’re right there with me. It’s a curated guide… & honestly, I feel like it’s an ingredient missing from other content out there.
Obstacles? Plenty.
Finding the balance between creativity & strategy. Staying consistent while juggling everything else. Oh, & “copy cats.” As a creator, this job can feel solo sometimes– it’s tough to find genuine people who want to see you win. But I’ve learned to just do me, trust the process, & I’m connecting with some amazing creators I genuinely LOVE making sh*t with :)
The best part? People are starting to recognize my silly goose self & actually tell me things like, “Hey thanks for the rec– I had a great time.” That’s the cherry on top!
The biggest hurdle? Imposter syndrome. But being hella ADHD, I’m like F it! When you show up consistently, rep neighborhoods you love, & provide value, your audience grows with you. They become your people– the real ATL chefs, adventurers escaping the norm, & the ones looking for something different. Those are the real ones!
Fast forward to 2025, & now, I get to collaborate with local businesses, share what makes Atlanta Atlanta, & help people discover the best things to do in the city. It’s been a journey of learning, evolving, & trusting the process— & I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m just here.
I’m just here, being Nerdy!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience by showing up as my real, nerdy self— no fluff, no fake vibes.
My advice? Be yourself, stay consistent, & don’t be afraid to carve your own lane— people connect with authenticity more than perfection.
& pay no attention to the influencers with fake followers & engagement—real community always wins in the end. 💛
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s in my OG submission but my audience “The best part? People are starting to recognize my silly goose self & actually tell me things like, “Hey thanks for the rec– I had a great time.” That’s the cherry on top!”
