We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesénia Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesénia below.
Jesénia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents recognized my gift, and ultimately a passion, and put everything they had into helping me develop and attain the skills required to pursue it.
The moment my parents realized that I could sing and play the piano, they placed me in lessons from age 9 until I went to college. They made sure I participated in competitions, seminars, invested in instruments, and “made” me practice everyday, haha. They believed in me so much that if there was ever a time I doubted myself or compared myself to others, my parents would talk me through whatever I was dealing with until they made sure I had no plans on giving up on my gift and dream.
Jesénia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a composer, orchestrator, and songwriter. I began singing and playing the piano at a young age in church. When I attended undergrad at Spelman College, I studied piano from my freshman to junior year. During my senior year, I began studying composition, specifically, film music, and fell in love with it. If I’m honest, I’ve always loved film music. I realized this when I was in the tenth grade. I was watching the movie Annie and knew I wanted to do something in film and theater. I wasn’t quite sure what yet, but when I began studying composition in college, I connected the dots. Since then, I have been writing music for films, documentaries, theater, and television.
As a songwriter, I write inspirational music that I hope positively impacts someone in the world. I began writing music in middle school, but didn’t pick up traction with writing consistently until the summer after I graduated high school. Since then, I’ve written hundreds of songs. In 2021, I released my first solo album: Introducing Jesénia Jackson, of which I am very proud of!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, definitely. I have a goal to be the best, but only because of, well, my parents of course, my personal goals, but also because of my spiritual belief. I am a Christian and I believe that if God gave me a gift, it’s my responsibility to develop that gift as much as possible to achieve all that I am supposed to achieve. Another goal that drives my journey is the path or standards of success I want my brothers to achieve alongside me–whatever they desire to achieve, I want them to freely achieve it and be the best. I have three younger brothers and I do my best to work hard to make the way easier for them and to give them any guidance I had to learn on my own. Working for them and continuing to explore the depths of my passion when I don’t feel like it or want to do something “easier”, keeps me going.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect…I believe it’s seeing or hearing others who have told me that my music has helped them in some way. Whether it’s getting through a tough time, finding their passion through my music, or simply making them happy. It wipes away all of the struggles you may have had to endure in order to write that song or piece of music and makes it completely worth it. My goal in life is to help as many people that are assigned to hear me and my music. So hearing and knowing that someone out there is being helped through my journey is worth it!
