We recently connected with Jes Drew and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jes thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
At the moment, I have two jobs: my day job and my creative writing business. I definitely take vacations from my day job. However, for me, my creative writing business IS my vacation. Every weekday, I write on my lunch break and in the evening. Every Saturday, I write from sunup to midnight. And my vacations are the days I get to spend every day (but Sunday) like a Saturday with writing. Sundays I take off as a day of rest, and I make sure I have time to celebrate holidays appropriately, of course. Would I recommend my schedule? No, but when your passion, your drive, and your dreams intersect so closely, sometimes you have to just go for it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a self-published author, and I wrote off-and-on for most of my childhood, but it was a decade ago that I started really writing as I do now. Eight years ago I published my first trilogy, and I haven’t looked back. I wouldn’t say I’m proud so much as amazed by how much I’ve accomplished in that time, with over forty books released in between managing a day job and finishing college. I’ve recently shifted from the mindset of just a writer to an entrepreneur, and it’s a big change of focus. I love my storeis, and they will always come first, but I am working hard to bring all my published works from the past up to the same tier of the ones I release now in terms of editing and formatting, and always branching into new secters of the indie world. It has certainly been an adventure!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There was a time during my writing career that I suffered from persistent depression disorder. My creativity took a big hit during that time, and I often didn’t know what to write a lot of the time. However, I knew that I had to write something, and I did. And I kept writing, and now on the other side of a supernatural recovery, I’m glad that I did not fall out of habit of writing, even during the days where it was just 100 words a day.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to one day be able to support myself and a household on just what I make as a writer and not have to go to a day job to make ends meet.
