Jerusha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?

Getting your first client is a great achievement, and probably one of the toughest hurdles to overcome as an independent contractor and business owner; And when you send out your first invoice AND it get’s paid, it feels even better. But throughout my entire journey as an entrepreneur, it is literally an experience that I remember even to this day. When I decided to switch my career and go into Social Media Marketing, it was during a time where the job wasn’t nearly as popular or needed as it is today; Nowadays you can login to any platform or job posting website and there are a plethora of companies, small business owners, or personal brands that need help with their social media, but when I started they were very much few and far between; Although I knew what it was that I wanted to do, I had no idea where to begin. So, I started by pushing myself to get out there and market my business online in Facebook groups and on my personal page, as well as in person by going to networking events and visiting local coffee shops. Finally, after a month of networking, I finally found someone who was interested in my services and was able to pitch to my very first client. Within 24hrs of my pitch, they ended up signing my contract and paying my invoice; And I remember that feeling of accomplishment, excitement, and dedication even to this day. That feeling is a constant reminder of how far I’ve come as a business owner and it motivates me to keep going when times get tough.

Jerusha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Jerusha Greenwald, and I am the owner of JG Media Marketing. Combining my love for social media, branding, business and content creation, I launched JG Media Marketing with the objective to help other businesses maximize their efforts within the Social Media Marketing industry. With over 30k followers on Instagram, I have marketed for clients across all industries, and created content for brands like Victoria’s Secret, Direct Auto Insurance, Lyft, and Wyndham. In the five years since I started my own business, I have scaled it and doubled my sales year after year without any coaching, experience, or mentors. My social media marketing business continues to grow my online presence to this day and I’ve had the chance to work with some amazing brands, business owners and people. Above all, I desire to fill a need in the digital marketing community that drives others to the success, happiness and freedom that I have been able to reach.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I don’t think there will ever be just one story that illustrates resilience in my journey of owning a business because I believe that’s pretty much all that entrepreneurship is. Starting a business can be tough, but it’s important to remember that failure is a normal part of the process – and being resilient in the face of setbacks is key to a businesses success.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

One lesson that I had to un-learn a few years into my business would definitely be that it is okay to say ‘no’ to a client and it is also essential to set boundaries. I think we can sometimes get caught up in the idea that ‘the customer is always right’, or we get worried about losing business so we end up saying yes to the things that we should be saying no, and ultimately we get taken advantage of and our work is not being valued. What I can say is that the customer is NOT always right and we need to establish boundaries with our clients and our work so that we can maintain a healthy work-life balance.
