Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jersey Mic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jersey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My name is Micheal Watkins. I was born in Trenton, New Jersey then later in life, moved and was raised in Atlanta, GA. Ever since I was young, I’ve felt a strong passion for the art of Hip-Hop and its culture. When I was about 6-7, I remember hearing a song titled; ‘I Can’ by NAS. Once I heard that song, there was something in me that clicked. NAS has always been my utmost favorite lyricist of all time and I dream of the day to be signed to his label, ‘Mass Appeal’.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Micheal Jamell Watkins – born July 23rd, 1994 in Trenton City, New Jersey.
When I lived in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, a family friend of mine named ‘Wu’ had a studio in his basement. As it being my first time stepping into an environment like this, I was fascinated in awe. I can remember that day vividly like it happened yesterday. Fast forward to 2007-2009. I moved to Atlanta, GA. One of my next door neighbors had a makeshift studio in his basement and we’d go down there and record tracks for the fun of it. Little did I know, this would grow to be my passion. I wrote songs day in and day out, practiced them, I even used to create a cypher circle at lunch in high school. ‘Jersey Mike’. I soon became a reckoned artist by my peers and loved ones. In 2011, I released my first single cover song titled; ‘Worst World Ever’ onto YouTube. This song started gaining traction for myself and also gave me the need to create more as people requested. As the years progress, I always sharpened my skills. I would use my personal trials and tribulations as material for my very own music. A couple years later, I fell off and lost focus and winded up being homeless and having to relocate to Racine, WI. Luckily, I met someone and was still able to record songs. (THANK GOD). Shortly after, I moved back to Atlanta, GA and hit the ground running! I had so much experience to talk about and life to share with my fans and listeners. Fast forward to 2021, I released my first album titled; ‘Faith in Fate’ which garnered me the looks I desperately wanted my whole life. 2 hit singles, ‘Bounce Back’ & ‘No Stress’, has furthered my career in ways unimaginable. Lastly, on July 23, 2022 – I released a sincere single titled; ‘I Do It For Hip-Hop’, dedicated to NAS himself. People are STILL going crazy and complimenting me on my vast vocabulary I’ve projected onto this track. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll get signed by NAS to Mass Appeal Records. Until then, I’m GOING HARD!!!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I’ve worked many of jobs to support my own career. No handouts, no industry label financial backing, etc. Everything I’ve accomplished has been off the merit of my own hard labor.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve drove countless miles to go perform in other states. No matter how far it was or who came with me, I had to make it happen. When I realized that my dream is only possible if I put in the necessary work, I took my music career much more serious. Talent is one thing. Dedication is another.
