We were lucky to catch up with Jerry Tyler Watson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jerry Tyler, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In 2016, I took the risk of quitting my management job in Mississippi to leave and move to Nashville to pursue a dream. I gave up everything I knew to set out and attempt to reach a goal I has had since I was 16 years old. I knew I want to do hair and wardrobe for music videos/tv/movies.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been working in the hair industry for 5 years. I started out as a receptionist at a salon in Nashville and then went to being a stylist at a blowout company. During the pandemic, I knew I wanted to do more. I then became a hairstylist/wardrobe stylist for multiple country music artists in the Nashville area.
Recently, I have gotten into installing extensions for clients. I work with the extensions brand Bellami.
I am most proud about having a wig that I styled for Lainey Wilson, being put in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I love connecting with my followers on social media and actually interacting with them. I think it’s crucial in my line of work to let my viewers in on my work and let them know what products and clothing I use for my artists.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn how to be more social. I am a very outgoing person to people that know me, but to people that don’t, I tend to be quiet and shy. I think working in my field, it can be a good and bad thing. Learning to be social has really helped me in my career.
