We were lucky to catch up with JERRY ROISENTUL recently and have shared our conversation below.
JERRY, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
My dad came to this country from Argentina with no money in his pocket and created an amazing Drapery Business for himself and my family. from the ground up. During the summers, I would go out and work with him, trying to learn all I could about business. I knew it was something I wanted to do one day. As I observed my dad over the majority of my life, I began to realize that there are a few major things it takes to become successful. In fact, every person I have ever read about, been around, interviewed or worked with, possessed these same traits.
1) COMMITMENT: You will never become successful if you are not fully committed to what you are doing as a profession. You have to be committed to be your best, do your best, and give your best everyday, because you”re best is all you’ve got, One of the many life lessons I learned from my dad that I still utilize to this day.
2) FOCUS: The world is full of distractions. It is easy to lose our focus on things that are not important. So, I have learned this valuable lesson over time: Either you learn how to manage your distractions, or your distractions will manage you. The best question to ask yourself when this happens is ,” Does this distraction need my IMMEDIATE attention?” Most of the time, they really don’t. We just think they do. So If the answer to that question is “NO”, I put it aside, finish what I need to do, and then handle it at that time. This lesson alone has been a game changer in my life.
3) DISCIPLINE: This is one that many people struggle with because we sometimes live in the opposite realm which is procrastination. I always coach people to understand the difference between the two. Procrastination is when you don’t do what you know you need to do because of how you feel about doing it. Discipline is doing what you need to do no matter how you feel about doing it. If everything we choose to do is solely based on how we feel, we will fail, simply because a majority of the things we need to do to become successful we will many times not want to do. Procrastination is a habit. So is discipline. We have to learn how to replace on with the other by practicing it everyday.
4) CONSISTENCY: My dad was a master at this. He always taught me that you will never find an inconsistent successful person, and to this day, he is right. I haven’t. I have learned to take CONSISTENT DIALY ACTION on the things I need to do to grow my business. And through consistency, you create momentum. And with momentum, that’s where the magic happens. But it all begins with being consistent in the things you need to do daily to make progress and move forward.
5) ACTION: Too many times, we can get caught thinking to much about what we should do instead of doing what we are thinking about, I have a saying I teach to all my coaching clients: Inspiration WITHOUT application will keep you in frustration. However, Inspiration WITH application will begin your transformation. Let’s not be professional students, learning all this amazing material and doing nothing with it. Put it to use..take action…and that’s when things start to happen.
JERRY, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
It was the summer of 2006. I was going through a divorce with my sons mom after 9 years of marriage. I went from seeing my son ( who was 3 years old at the time) everyday to weekends only. I began to sink into a deep depression. The business that I had spent the previous 13 years building (network marketing business) sank in front of my eyes. And in November of that year, I found myself on the floor of my apartment writing a letter to my son explaining to him why his dad took his own life. It was the darkest time of my life.
I was the guy everyone went to for encouragement, inspiration, and motivation. Yet, here I found myself getting ready to take my own life.
In the weeks that followed, I began to realize something that would change the rest of my life. I asked myself” How could the man that everyone came to for support be on the floor trying to end it all?” The answer hit me like a two by four: When I was in my prime, everything going well, I was managing my mindset. But when I got to that floor, my mindset had managed me. I figured out that what happens to us is not the problem, because sometimes we can’t control that. But how we choose to respond and react to what happens is totally in our control. I made the decision that day that I would spend the rest of my life helping people develop a Champions Mindset! Teaching them how to manage the doubts, fears, insecurities, discouragements , disappointments, and frustrations that we all so often feel, so that those things didn’t manage and control their lives.
But things didn’t change for me overnight .I struggled for almost 5 years after that, trying to find what I wanted to do, how I wanted to do it, and how I could make the biggest impact in peoples lives. I never thought I would lose my business. In fact, I believed that’s what i was going to do the rest of my life. But sometimes, God has other plans.
So, in 2013, I started Coaching4Champions, which became Champion Mentorship, Inc in 2017.. My focus was on helping people build up their mindsets, learn how to become better and more efficient communicators, and become stronger more confident leaders.
In 2018, I had the privilege of becoming a Certified Coach, Speaker and Trainer with the Maxwell Leadership Team. John Maxwell and his books and trainings had a profound impact on my life and the direction I started to move into after 2006. Everything he offered fit perfectly into my vision, my passion and the direction I wanted to go.
Over the last 11 years, I have had the privilege of traveling all around the world, sharing these strategies and principles with thousands and thousands of people. Strategies and Principles I learned during the darkest time of my life.
I now have the privilege of working with corporations, network marketing companies, non profits and church leadership to bring them high level leadership, communication, mindset and team building training. I can deliver these trainings through Keynote Speaking, In Person or Virtual trainings, Lunch and Learns, and Masterclasses. I always let the organizations I work for know that whatever problem you may have or are trying to solve, Chances are I will have a solution to help you.
People sometimes ask me how would I describe myself, and I think the best way is from a testimony one of my clients sent me. He said “Jerry’s knowledge, passion, compassion, energy, sincerity, and genuine love that he exudes are beyond anything that can truly be described .” I have to say that pretty much describes me to a “T”.
What I am most proud of is I took a situation that was almost going to end my life and turned it around to change my life. To be a beacon of hope and encouragement not only for the people I serve, but for my son. My story has been able to help so many people and allow me to relate and understand where they are coming from. It allows me to connect with them, develop wonderful relationships, which translates into next level results.
My goal is simply to help people live their best life, becoming the best version of themselves they can possibly be. I believe that I am equipped with the tools, experience and passion to make that happen.
And I would love to be able to do that for your readers.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Between 2017-2019, I traveled all over the world sharing my “Champion Summits.” An all day training on how to develop the MIndset of Leadership. I traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and about 35 states. It was an exciting time!
I had the entire year of 2020 booked out, including my first ever trip to the UK in May of that year.
And then Covid hit!
Every event I had cancelled, including the UK event. I was looking at a situation that was dire. The way I made my living was no longer an option now. I had thoughts racing through my head that I would lose my house, my car, everything I had because was income stream was gone. I knew the only way I would survive was I had to pivot.
So, i decided to learn how to do virtual events. Understand, technology to me is like a root canal with no novocaine. I just don’t get it, understand it or like it, but I had to figure it out. I took some trainings and decided that my first virtual event would be for the UK, I may not have been able to be there in person, but it was the next best thing.
I had about 60 people that joined that training for 7 hours. The feedback was incredible. I then did a US version in June and had over 1,000 people register. I continued to do various virtual events throughout the year, and because of the pivot in the most difficult time, I had the biggest and mist successful growth year in my business.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
That is twofold.
First, results! The people I was coaching and training were applying what they learned from me and were getting results. As they did, they started to share with other people. Referrals started flowing in, and before I knew it, my business exploded to the point I had more work than I had time.
I firmly believe that the greatest content that someone can teach makes no difference if the person learning it cannot get results from it. I took the things I had learned on my journey and packaged it in a simple, easy to follow format that people felt confident in using. And when they did, the results happened.
The second thing that helped build my reputation was what I call V.A.T. : I was Vulnerable, Authentic, and Transparent about every facet of my journey. I never put myself on a pedestal or made people feel I was better than them. I shared my struggles as well as my successes, my doubts and fears, failures and victories. By doing so, it made me more real, where people could connect with me and my story and feel safe and comfortable learning from me. I believe this helped me build my reputation as much as anything else I did
