Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jerry Chandler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jerry, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
We are distributed by a national distribution company, however we also have a webstore for customers that don’t have computers or can’t get to a store that may carry our items. We treat every customer, no matter how big or especially, how small, as if they are our best friends. I frequently get personal letters in mail orders in which the customer states how much they love us because they usually get their order within a few days of placing, and they go on to tell me how other companies make them wait up to six weeks to receive their orders.
Jerry, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are first and foremost a film restoration company, with our own line of DVDs and Blurays. Our origin story is long and involved, but there is a four part documentary that was made on us and can be found on Youtube called ” The Synapse Story”. Our most famous restoration was for the Italian Art/Horror film “Suspiria”.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Don and I met in the 1980’s when he responded to a personal ad in Fangoria magazine, for VHS video traders. We were both horror film fanatics. We became friends over the years and in 1996 we started Synapse Films together. We have been partners ever since and are still going strong.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I was in the steel business. Sixteen years in, we formed Synapse Films as a hobby for me, but a livlihood for Don. Eventually I closed down the steel business and went into Synapse full time.
