We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jerrod Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jerrod thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Yes. We at Breakin Khainz serve all underserved communities. With me actually living in these said communities over the course of my life, I have seen that there is always a lack of support and resources. In return that can open the doors for the negative matter of human trafficking and criminalization of our young adults and youth that dwell in these communities. We feel it is our duty to bridge that gap by offering supporting services such as mentorship, utility assistance, professional development, job placement and much more.
Jerrod, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jerrod Williams and I am an US Navy veteran as well as father and community leader. I also am thr Vice President of Breakin Khainz non profit organization and a Career Development Technician for Veterans that are looking for employment when they exit the military lifestyle through apprenticeships. In all my main goal in life is to help my fellow man or women. With Breakin Khainz I can do that by providing mentorship services to our male youth, young adults, or anyone that endured abuse and trauma. I help with building their resumes and couch them on interview practices so that they can confidently walk in their next interview with complete confidence. We also provide utility assistance as well because for me I truly have understanding and I know that life can get hard for us all so I believe that is what makes me stand out from others. I do not mind taking that walk in your shoes. I am truly here to help you build that bridge to betterment.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
The funny thing is that my business partner is my lovely wife Dominique McGee. Realistically speaking we were already doing this type of work independently on a way smaller scale. We would clothe, feed, provide shelter, and even provide monetary assistance with the ones that truly did not have anything or anyone at our own residence. Obviously this was not the best decision made at that time but it opened the door for Dominiqe to map out the blueprint for Breakin Khainz and allow me to provide nearly identical service on a more stable and broader scale.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The advice I have for anyone in maintaining high morale in any team is to always acknowledge your teams accomplishments no matter how big or small they are. Always show your appreciation with your team because no one wants to work anywhere they are not valued. Lastly, always keep open communication throughout the team and promote a positive work environment.
