We were lucky to catch up with Jerri P Beasley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jerri P , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on was my legendary stage Play When Momma Prays, this story is true to life and deals with the struggles of a young girls who life was destroyed by an abusive husband and drug addiction, this has been most meaningfully because of the lives it has changed, many have seen themselves or a love one in the storyline and made drastic changes in order to better themselves or how they handle their love one
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got started in radio over 30 years ago at a station in the very back woods of Conroe TX called Kyok 1140 AM being in the back of the woods yet being a strong voice over the airwaves gave me space and opportunity to be creative , I always loved to write but I only to write stories that were someone’s story, my listening audience consisted of the elderly who would have nothing to do but listen to the radio and call me , I would spend hours listening to their stories and imagining how , I would rewrite their endings in order to take away the pain and regret many of them felt. As a writer, producer , radio COO , radio personality, Mental Health and Life coach, my goal is always to ignite change, to rewrite the story that many play over in their heads and add hope, I believe a creative mind must first be a free mind and trauma must first be talked out then walked out so we can be co creators of our future instead of victims to our past. My discipline is to keep my mind free of confusion and uncluttered of pointless worries, my life as a creator can’t excel any other way and I know , I’m am meant to help others reimagine and rewrite their story
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My resilience comes from not having another option but to obey the drive within me to complete what I can’t see but what I know I will if I keep going, as a creative we bore easily and aren’t really able to adjust to the beat of another’s drum, I have tried to do what I do according to what is popular only to find out I can’t do what is popular but what is purposeful for my journey. I am called to uplift the minds of others because I’ve had to personally fight for my own mind, I know that creativity is a weapon that will slay depression and oppression but if our mind is not in proper alignment we won’t be able to create the story that fits our future
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Ive had to learn not everyone is your audience and to continue to pour into unreceptive places will only drain you and frustrate you. I’ve learned less is more when you aim for quality and not quantity, I don’t need a lot of followers but I do need some strong supporters , those who will not only take a sit on the sidelines but those who will cheer and encourage from the sidelines. It takes a lot to stay motivated to motivate others, it will at times appear as if you’re all alone but it’s only a facade, keep going you have all you need within and more will come along on the journey
