Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jerome Chester . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jerome , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
During Artscape 2015, I experienced one of the most heartwarming acts of kindness. As I strolled along the festival on Charles Street, I was mesmerized by the incredible artwork displayed by various artists. Among them, Clare Elliot’s creations stood out with their vibrant colors and captivating beauty.
As I admired Clare’s artwork, I struck up a conversation with her friend, Krystle Starvis. During our chat, I mentioned that I didn’t have any business cards of my own. Without hesitation, Krystle offered her own card and surprised me with a generous gift of $20, accompanied by a warm and genuine smile. I couldn’t contain my happiness, and my face beamed with joy. This simple but profound gesture was one of the kindest acts I have ever experienced in the art world.

Jerome , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jerome Chester, but my peers know me as TheGroovyVandal, and I proudly identify as an artist hailing from West Baltimore. Creativity has been an integral part of my life since as far back as I can remember. I’ve established two brands that are close to my heart: “Alleykidart Studio,” a versatile design house that serves as a hub for all my creative pursuits, ranging from graphic and logo design to brand identity and consulting, along with various unique items like t-shirts, keychains, hand-painted hats, furniture, life-size pillows, and anything else my imagination conjures up. Additionally, I’ve created my clothing brand, “Groovy’s Corner Store,” which seeks to spread positive, satirical, and cool imagery on clothing for the masses. My ultimate vision is to turn it into a brick-and-mortar establishment that offers not only clothing but also food and fresh juices, envisioning it as a vibrant and wholesome corner store, akin to Whole Foods.
Throughout my journey, there are a few things I take immense pride in. First and foremost, my ability to channel creativity even when faced with limited resources, using what I had to create something from nothing. I’ve had my fair share of challenges, and there were times when I lacked what I needed to thrive. However, I always remained persistent and endured through the toughest of days. This enduring love I have for my craft has been the driving force behind my progress. There were moments when I faced disappointment, where the return on my investments seemed negligible, or days when pop-up events yielded no sales. Financial struggles and unreliable clients tested my resolve, but I never allowed myself to give up.
I wish to impart this valuable lesson to the youth – never give up. Transformation from “Blue Collar to Blue Chip” doesn’t happen overnight; it’s a gradual process, and success may not come easily, if at all. Nevertheless, the journey is rich with experiences, and I’ve come to appreciate these moments as “tree-shaking character-building” times. Despite the smiles and tears along the way, every step has been worth it. So, to all those facing challenges, embrace the journey and hold onto your dreams, for the growth and lessons found in between the struggles are what truly shape you as an individual.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The book “Tao Te Ching” by Laozi has significantly influenced my thought process.
Several individuals, namely Arthur Shopenhauer, Miya Bailey, Hebru Brantley, Mathew Herget, and Dick Gregory, have played a pivotal role in shaping my work ethic, enabling me to access my creativity more frequently.
Every day, I find inspiration in the words of the prophet Project Pat, who said, “I only associate with those who reciprocate the same loyalty to me.”

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Create an enduring legacy through a remarkable body of work before my time is up. Infuse the world with vibrant colors beyond what it was when I got it, and pave the way for my children to follow in my inspiring footsteps.
