We recently connected with Jerome Barkley and have shared our conversation below.
Jerome, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It’s interesting because there wasn’t a manual on how be podcaster when i started. Most of it was trail and error, each episode i learned something new, whether it was projecting more, showing more personality, constructing better conversations and learning how to editing audio then video which would come later. I used a combination of YouTube Tutorials and studying radio and podcaster personalities like Howard Stern, Quincy “Q Deezy” Harris, Joe Rogan, Troi “Star” Torain and others. Knowing what i know now i could’ve did a couple practice episodes to insure the quality was better and studied the market of podcasting. The most essential skill is editing, to produce a good quality podcast it has to be pleasant to listen to for the listeners and that comes with good audio and video quality. Starting in 2016 there weren’t as many resources for podcasters as it is now, if the genre was larger and had more events and conferences that would’ve been a tremendous help.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Originally i am from Philadelphia, Pa, i came to Ohio for college and decided to stay after graduation. While at Wilberforce University i was a radio personality at our local college radio station WURS which lead me into podcasting. I can say I’m most proud of becoming a resource for other inspiring podcasters.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
As a interviewer i get to sit down with a lot of artists and creatives. What i tend to hear from them is that support can look like understanding the value of their work and sharing what they do.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There are so many resources i whish i new about and were available during my journey from how to publish a podcast, software best equipment to use and a place where a community of podcasters congregate.
