We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jernē a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jernē , appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?

I definitely have my moments where I think “dang, if I’d started earlier I’d be much further” but I realized I didn’t know the things I know now then. The experiences, the people, the mistakes up to this point have made me who I am and given me the confidence in myself I didn’t once have.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is Jernē and I am an R&B singer. I’ve been singing since I was a kid but was always too shy to get in front of a crowd to do it seriously. It wasn’t until my junior year in high school when I decide to do the talent show, I saw the reaction of all the girls when I began singing that I realized “yeah, this is what I gotta do forever” because that energy was like none I’ve felt before. One of the things I’m most proud of is sticking it through this long, the self doubt I’ve over come to be the best person I can be has only made being an artist that more free, fun and interesting. Although confidence in myself and my artistry have grown high, I’m always looking for ways to become better because I’m a firm believer that every day you don’t work on yourself you lose a bit of yourself .

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson I had to learn and still unlearning is perfection. There’s no such thing as perfect, everything can be better. I’m music there are no rules and mistakes are golden, it either sounds & feels good or it doesn’t.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Although my audience is small, I’ve gained what I have from being myself everyday. I’ve realized that people love genuineness, and I’d rather have 100 fans that I know and can build a bond with than 1M people I could never relate too.
