We were lucky to catch up with Jernard Pinckney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JJ thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
After wrapping up my career playing college sports i was intrigued to peruse a different medium in life. Graduated and was back home, I knew I had to make a plan to explore the world through my own lens.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I took a shot in the dark as generic as that sounds, I didn’t have any formal experience or back ground in visuals arts but I had a natural fixation and curiosity. A good friend of mine orchestrated a painting session for us, after the first piece was created we both knew there was a natural talent underneath the surface. From there I put everything into understanding the craft along with the business side of the practice.
One of my unique qualities is my intuitive abilities and competitive drive to better myself. I have no fear when creating or thinking about what needs to be created. If there is a story that moves me, i have to tell it no matter the circumstance, im going to tell no matter what it takes.
I’m most proud of how regardless of my personal success it has be a priority to lift other up simultaneously. I designed my own residency program out of my studio and facilitated programming for 5 black and brown artist. I am currently developing the programming for a residency right now. Me and my business partner have locked in a space to host and we are seeking funding to support our vision. We have a summer 2024 projection.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Allow black people to monetize their work, thus creating a career that is sustainable. Artist need mentorship, patrons and general advocates especially from backgrounds of self taught or early careered.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get tell stories and preserve culture through my own personal lens. This inspires others to do the same no matter the medium or skill level.
